We do have some early accounts around the 400s affirming what we still believe - the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) and St Augustine both described it as rays of light from the sun penetrating glass without breaking or injuring it.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.
