Taxila, one of the earliest centres of Indian civilisation was at this very place. Twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are on the same ground where once lived one of the finest people on earth. In education or in trade of Silk Route, Taxila was a prosperous city and state.

Maybe that’s the reason that Pakistan chose to make their capital there and call it “Islamabad”.

Rawalpindi before independence was a tourist town, a natural route to Kashmir, Himachal etc. Thousands of foreigners used to stay there for weeks before going to Himalayas. Best for acclimatisation for people from plains.

Famous Indian actors Balraj Sahni and Bhisham Sahni were from Rawalpindi and Balraj Sahni & his wife were often talk of the town before independence due to their modern lifestyle in 1930s.

Indeed a great loss for India that a bunch of thugs with their English masters separated Taxila from India.
Tell your kids that Indian boundaries we see now are not our natural boundaries. Tell them about our great civilisational centres we lost in 1947.

In Rajasthani chronicles, it was Bappa Rawal, founder of Mewar who made a fort in Rawalpindi and fought against invaders. Hence the name. Although all historians do not agree with this as the distance between Mewar and Rawalpindi is too much for maintaining supply lines.
