Annual offseason message.
𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗟𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿:

Dear Nationals fans,

At the beginning of every offseason, I send you a message spouting the usual nonsense that I’m expected to say and make promises everyone knows I can’t keep.

This year I’ve decided to try something new: I’m going to be honest with you. Here it is:

The Nationals organization and fans are rightfully excited about our many good young players. So are we. Kudos to our strong front office teams, both past and present, that assembled those players thru trades and drafts.

To be clear, this offseason, Paul Toboni will NOT have the financial resources he needs to build a winning team in 2027. Just like we didn’t authorize any spending by Mike Rizzo after 2020.

The organization will also be jacking up ticket prices and concession costs again. We will also raising Parking prices in our taxpayer funded stadium.

Despite your many requests, no way we are hosting NatsFest, despite season ticket holders wanting to meet James Wood, CJ Abrams, Brady House, Cade Cavalli, Jake Irvin and Foster Griffin.

If by chance we do wind up holding NatsFest, it will be outside in the cold January weather rather than inside in the warm convention center. Why? It’s cheaper. Put another sweater on.

Most of all, don’t expect any big signings this offseason signaling that we are going to use our great young core of players to try to be a contender. More likely, we will pillage what we have.

To be sure, we will say the right things and go thru the motions, but don’t forget, other than the Keibert Ruiz extension in 2023, our ownership group hasn’t agreed to ANY extensions or long term agreements since 2020.

Why have the other principal owners of the Nationals, my sisters and my brothers in law, prevented us from investing in the organization? Why are the Nationals regularly among the bottom MLB teams in terms of spending…despite Forbes Magazine estimating our families wealth at $6 billion in 2026?

Here’s why:

we are waiting until the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement is settled and the value of the franchise shoots up $500 million, $1 billion or more and then we will sell to a private equity fund or some Chinese, Korean or Saudi conglomerate.

We will keep the team’s cost low, so when we sell, our families profit margins will be higher.

My late father, a homegrown DMV baseball fan, bought the organization for $450 from MLB. When the CBA passes, the Nationals will be worth well over $3 billion, probably more. The Padres just sold for $3.9 billion and the DMV market is twice the size of the San Diego metro market.

Honestly, Nats fans, why would we spend to try to build a winner? Rizzo’s Soto trade is paying huge dividends with James Wood & CJ Abrams and Toboni just got 4 good pitchers for Luis Garcia, Jr.

You Nats fans are really suckers. I can’t believe you still believe anything I say.

We've seen the Nats try to win the last two years with a top-heavy roster. It hasn't worked, and their lack of organizational depth has been exposed. That has to be addressed, and this is the first step toward that.
