@Birdyword Given the larger than ever proportion of us who are working desk jobs — and are therefore unlikely to cause a drunken industrial accident — sinking drinks at lunch has never been more feasible for the masses. The time has come.
@jessicaelgot It’s quite funny that Roundhay’s Wikipedia page lists Jimmy Savile under its “Notable people,” section, but not Truss. I guess the feeling is mutual!
@ChefMiew My local Chongqing noodles spot in Beijing decided to make the most of the recent foreign tourism boom by putting up a sign that said “We Speak English!!!”
They don’t. But they know that once you’ve ordered by gestures, you’ll enjoy it.
@AdsoOfBelk Totally. One of my favorite items of clothing I own is a US-vintage-style corduroy carpenter’s jacket made by a brand in Dalian. Was like 400RMB/$60.

@Liv_Agar His other example was that historians can prove southern Tibet belongs to China through place-name analysis. Ultimately the point of the humanities is to expose the “discourse traps” behind Western concepts like “empire” and build an “independent Chinese knowledge system.”
@Liv_Agar There was a recent essay from a Chinese Marxism professor advocating for more funding for “niche” humanities skills. One of his arguments was that Chinese archeologists had proved that Chinese people evolved in China. So that’s one route to relevance.
Given these recurring media reports and general fears over food safety, it’s pretty obvious why click-hungry posters would make up stories about “bleeding fields”. 4/4
Police in China’s Henan province have punished at least 10 people for posting rumors online about “bleeding wheat fields,” including AI images. My first question — what is a bleeding wheat field?? 1/4
Sadly, this isn’t the first time there has been a scandal about red, polluted water being used for crops. It’s not even the first time in Hebei. There was a similar story in another part of the province back in 2018. 3/4
