The game was not over just because the NBC scorebug hit zeros. That overlay is not the official clock. NBC even said so afterward: their cameras are not the official arbiter of timekeeping. Replay officials used a direct shot of the stadium clock, synced into the Big Ten replay system before kickoff. That feed showed 1 second left when Western Michigan’s Micah Davis touched the ball.

That’s the whole ruling. It is not a made-up extra second. NCAA Rule 4-2-3-a says a loose ball not in player control is out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of bounds. Davis jumped from an established out-of-bounds position. Contact with the ball at that moment made the play dead and stopped the clock. If that contact happened with 0:01 still on the official clock, Michigan gets another snap. That is the rule, not a vibe.

Replay is also allowed to correct clock status in the last two minutes. The crew did not invent a new play after the game ended. They reviewed when the ball became dead, then reset the clock to that moment. The Big Ten released the actual review video. The MAC commissioner looked at it and accepted the explanation. Western Michigan’s own AD said the Big Ten told him there is a known discrepancy between the broadcast clock and the official replay clock, and that the officials used the official one.

So the accurate version is not “clock at zeroes, then magic.” It is:

1. Broadcast clock and official replay clock did not match.
2. Officials used the official clock.
3. An out-of-bounds defender touched a live ball with 1 second showing on that clock.
4. The rule stops the clock there.
5. Michigan still had to convert the second Hail Mary.

You can hate the optics. Fair. A nationally televised game should not have one clock for 20 million viewers and another clock for the booth. That is embarrassing. You can also hate that WMU played well enough to win and still lost. Also fair. None of that makes the added second a conjuring trick. It makes it a bad-looking application of a real rule on a clock the public could not see.
