Q7–The Liking Principle “You are more likely to get a ‘Yes’ & compliance from Tough Kids when they like you than when they actively dislike you.” Tools like positive humor, compliments & having a positive authority in place have a powerful influence. Tough Kids p53-55. #LionsROAR
@mistypettyNpreK I agree! This Tough Kids book has been very equipping for me! I have also been inspired at how many of the tools mentioned we already use at our campus. Go Lions! #LionsROAR
Q6–A takeaway will be to include some new tools in my group behavior plan: individual charting strategies for “saboteurs” as well as “group contingencies” & “mystery motivators” to add variety and group motivation in the music room. Tough Kids p 136-9, 164. #LionsROAR
Q5–My compliment goes to my specials team who see every tough kid in school and inspire me and support me with new ideas to manage those students and motivate them to success. #allieburney#haha_hannah#ronyholt#LionsRoar
@Ms_DePinto Q4–This is so true and why I really liked the reminder to ignore difficult behaviors whenever those behaviors are used to get your attention (differential attention). Tough Kids p. 157 #LionsROAR
Q2–Behavior reciprocation: “The more positives you give, the more you will get positive compliance in return.” Avoiding the “negative reciprocity trap” was a good reminder. Tough Kids p 52 #LionsROAR
Q1– Interdependent group contingencies have worked well in the music room to encourage positive participation as groups lean on each other to earn a Game Day or In-School Field Trip. “We all need to work together.” Tough Kids p 136 #LionsROAR
@MeganGaskins1 And it looks different every year! Figuring out the discipline strategies that work for specific students is the great mystery and dance of managing a classroom.
@AllieBurney So true. My goal to solve every problem is unrealistic. I love the quote on p3, "some problems and issues can be solved, but some can only be managed."
@mistypettyNpreK And the realities are hidden and surface when you least expect them to. The idea of "emotional noise" was an interesting concept as I consider what each student is bringing into my classroom that has nothing to do with me personally or what I teach.
#lionsLEARN Q9--"There is an emotional dance that goes on everyday in the classroom between the educator and the students." I feel this every class period! I dance through my lessons motivating good behavior and not causing worse behavior to achieve the goal of learning.
#lionsLEARN Q8--Fave #1: "Some problems and issues can be solved, but some can only be managed." Fave #2 "Emotion is processed 200-5000 x faster than thought."
#lionsLEARN Q7--My classroom will be more safe & productive when I work to validate all students, create an environment that motivates good behaviors and stay in tune with my own energy, stress and emotional triggers.
