The devastation caused by the floods in Nepal is heartbreaking to see. With so many lives lost and people missing this is a horrible tragedy. With British nationals taking part in the religious pilgrimage and affected, communities across the country will be feeling particularly hurt and anxious and my thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with them.

Consular support is available to British nationals who need assistance and I have spoken to ministers about the work of the FCDO crisis centre. I am grateful to all involved in responding to support those affected.

The extra 200 police officers in Middlesbrough are very welcome. More officers on our streets can only be a good thing.

But this cannot just be a temporary boost. Cleveland needs more police officers permanently.

Even Labour’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Matt Storey, has warned that the current funding settlement leaves Cleveland Police facing a £2.4 million shortfall.

Our officers face some of the highest levels of demand in the country. They need the long term funding and resources to match it.

It turns out when Andy Burnham said he was going to be pragmatic over the North Sea it was just talk.

Shutting down the North Sea is an act of economic insanity and it’s going to leave us all poorer and weaker. He wants a round of applause for signing off one field, but thousands of people are still losing their jobs because he’s keeping Miliband’s ideological ban on new licences in place.

He’s no better than Keir Starmer, letting ordinary Brits suffer because he is being run by his out of touch backbenchers.
