New Study Shows Climate Hazards Are Disrupting WASH Services in Eastern Uganda’s Informal Settlements

A new study by MakSPH researchers and colleagues @isunju_j, Joyce Magala, Solomon T. Wafula, Peter Tamas, @DidacusN31386, Comfort Hajra Mukasa, Richard K. Mugambe, Dereje Amene Yimam, Trophy Akello, Jovan Galiwango, Doreen Nakalembe, Shakiim Mubiru, Remegio Ndyanabo, Mirandah Naamala, Ronald Ogwok, Aisha Nalugya, @BridgetTamale, Anguzu Geofrey, Martin Mujjabi Mukasa, Trasias Mukama, David Ssekamatte and the late Tonny Ssekamatte, found that climate-related hazards are disrupting water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in Eastern Uganda’s informal settlements.

Published online in May 2026 in Scientific Reports, the study, Household vulnerability to climate impacts on WASH and risk mitigation in informal settlements of Eastern Uganda, assessed household vulnerability to floods and droughts, WASH impacts, and risk mitigation in Mbale City. Researchers surveyed 589 households using an adapted World Health Organization climate vulnerability checklist and robust least squares regression.

Floods were the most reported hazard, affecting 27.3% of households, followed by water-level rise at 16.1%, drought at 12.9%, and heatwaves at 8.5%. Key impacts included reduced access to safe water, wastewater and sewerage disruption, damage to waste storage, limited hygiene services, and increased susceptibility to waterborne diseases from animal faeces and sewage contamination. Households in temporary housing, those with disabled members, lower-altitude areas, and lower subjective social status were more vulnerable.

The findings call for stronger water governance, climate-resilient WASH systems, integrated planning, and multi-sectoral partnerships to protect vulnerable communities.
