(He/him) VR/AR @BoozAllen. PhD Physics from UW; created NOMR, a VR lab with novel physics. VP IT for ๐ @OUTinSTEM. ๐ Dahli, ๐ @JoshLaBounty. Opinions my own.
@sean_ong Exactly. There's at least a couple dozen Quest 1s sitting in a closet at UW hoping to be used as a class set again. I could see them being usable for that purpose for another 5 years easily.
The Quest 1 originally released in May 2019. Not even 5 years old. They still work fine. This is insane. Will any investment in Meta VR hardware have a maximum shelf life of 5 years? That'd make for a very, very hard sell to most educators.
Hello world! I'm on the market for a summer internship, contracting gig, or full-time job as early as June 3. I'm a passionate and skilled #VR/#AR developer and researcher with 5 years' experience designing, building, and assessing innovative, cutting-edge VR education apps.
@elinbjorling Whenever I see gun policy headlines making the rounds, all I can think about is the fact that the @NIH has given so few grants to study gun violence in the last decade that you could count them on one hand. Funding research should be policy step #1.
A friend gave out kazoos as wedding favors in June. I've kept mine in my pocket ever since and you would not believe how often it comes in handy.
Getting a class's attention? Kazoo.
Tired of whooping and cheering at an event? Kazoo.
Winning at trivia? Kazoo.
My @hcdeUW students are beginning their capstone prototyping phase. What are your favorite #prototyping resources when designing for #VirtualReality or XR? Wondering what some folks like @kentbye@michaelybecker and orgs like @IEEEVR are seeing/using/thinking about.
@danny_doucette Wonder if LANL management is aware that several of their staff scientists are spending their time calling out their own prejudices with a painfully long game of "um, actually" instead of whatever it is they're paid to be doing.
"That's beautiful, sweetheart" your voice shakes as your kid hands you yet another work of macaroni art.
Sweat pools on your brow. You haven't seen the surface of your fridge door in 4 years.
You try to wedge it between the handprint turkey and the pipe cleaner rainbow, but -
@danny_doucette @WorkersAtState The only reason grad workers have mental healthcare coverage and something resembling a living wage at UW is @UAW4121. Universities know exactly what they need to do to improve grad student mental health; they're just unwilling to loosen the purse strings to do so.
@nimajamalian The acronyms are kinda fun though. URP sounds like you're about to be sick, and HDRP "hudderp" sounds like you're saying "herp-a-derp" but with a syllable cut due to austerity.
@benz145 Sadly no, but Beat Saber is close; it doesn't make the list but not for lack of merit. I just love a lot of other games.
Notes on Blindness, despite not being a game, is my #1 favorite VR experience.
[tons of blood stains]
what *happened* here??
[touching blood stain] alright, what were they doing
[observes]
okay so they're trying to - OOOOH THEY FORGOT TO CALL SetDirty() yeah yup that'd do it rip
@donaldLchi Not pens or pencils; everyone else is giving them out too, and the branded ones are rubbish 90% of the time.
My faves:
- Metal straws (preferably iridescent)
- Pronoun pins
- Pop sockets (kinda spendy)
- Phone wallets
- Webcam covers
- Lip balm (you will save someone's day)
