In Chicago, we believe in academic freedom, teaching Black history, supporting trans and immigrant youth, teaching civics, and doing our part to stand up to the billionaires who have taken over the federal government. The same people erasing the Tuskegee Airmen from museums are investigating CPS for staying committed to teaching about them. It is not a coincidence that the administration disenfranchising Black voters in the South is investigating how we teach children in the North.

That’s why a delegation of Chicago youth, families, and educators went to D.C. this week to fight for our education and protect our academic freedom. Thank you to our CTU delegation who stood up for our students and our schools.

This Administration has removed the achievements of the Air Force’s first female Thunderbird pilot Retired Colonel Nicole Malachowski. The removal of these articles have sparked criticism because her place in Air Force history is not a Political slogan it’s well documented.

This makes us less safe, and authorities need to show the city they take this seriously. In our schools, we teach Chicago's children the value of diversity and the history of movements for civil rights and racial justice. It's a reminder that the fight isn't over and that Jim Crow isn't only rising in the South.

The Confederacy lost before, and those trying to bring it back will lose again. But it takes vigilance, unity, and a commitment to make no room for racism in our city. This needs to be addressed swiftly and strongly.

The hypocrisy is as blatant as it is predictable.

A Black teenager attends an event he has every right to attend, legally possesses a knife, is confronted, and suddenly the chorus becomes: “Why did he have a knife?” “He should have walked away.” “He shouldn’t have defended himself.”

A white teenager travels to a city where he doesn’t live, inserts himself into a volatile protest, carries an AR-15 he was too young to possess, claims he is there to protect property he does not own, shoots two people, and the very same voices instantly declare: “That was self-defense.”

So which is it?

The answer is painfully obvious.

In America, self-defense is not a principle. It is a racial privilege. A privilege extended to white people and denied to Black people.

Amber Guyger, a Dallas police officer, murdered Botham Jean, a 26-year-old unarmed accountant after walking into his apartment, thinking it was hers. She was convicted and sentenced to TEN YEARS.

Jason Van Dyke, a Chicago police officer, murdered Laquan McDonald by shooting him 16 times in the back as he walked away. He was convicted and sentenced to SIX YEARS AND NINE MONTHS. He served three years and was released.

Shaun Lucas, a Wolfe City, TX police officer, was charged with murdering Jonathan Price, who was unarmed. He shot him four times outside a convenience store. HE WAS ACQUITTED BY AN ALL WHITE JURY.

Karmelo Anthony killed Austin Metcalf in self-defense after fearing for his safety in a chaotic, escalating confrontation. He was convicted and sentenced to THIRTY-FIVE YEARS.
