This course has helped me spread my news about how social media can negatively affect mental health and how educating schools, parents, and children on cyber bullying and the effects it has on mental health can help take positive steps in the right direction #EM203Mueller
@JuliaChEM203 Quite a few! As with most things, there are huge positives and also risks. @ayemind99 was a big piece of work I was involved with that looked at this with young people https://t.co/0UNIz9MAt7
@JuliaChEM203 There’s potential for great good - communities of interest, activism, peer support, advocacy without necessity for talking, ability to tell and make sense of personal story and try our identities. 1/3
@JuliaChEM203 Then there’s potential for harm - trolling, triggering, getting sucked into vortices that can encourage some behaviours, fomo, judging self on others external image etc 2/3
@JuliaChEM203 Ultimately we need to encourage good digital citizenship - whether with young people or in MH treatment terms support services understanding people’s digital lives and helping them manage, sustain and grow them whilst self-managing risks. 3/3
@JuliaChEM203 1) Thanks for the question Julia! It looks like you've been doing a lot of research into this, based on your tweets. While we can't say that it's good or bad, social media is definitely changing our student's lives. There are some amazing things coming out of it...
@JuliaChEM203 2) like connectivity like never before (including some Twitter conversations between classmates, classes, and schools across the country), but then there negatives too, and some really tough issues to sort through. What do you think?
@JuliaChEM203 Hi Julia, thank you for reaching out. Because we're not medical professionals and have no data in this field, I am sorry that we won't be able to comment on the effects of social media on mental health. Good luck with your project and thanks for thinking of us.
@JuliaChEM203 The question is more complex that that. #SocialMedia as medium can be both positive & negative depending on circumstances & use. look forward to your views tomorrow @MHChat discussing Gossip & #MentalHealth@MHChat 8pm GMT / 3pm EST @MHChat#MHChat
For my EM203 class mates...do you think limiting social media for children will help decrease cyber bullying? Or do you think it will still continue regardless? #EM203Mueller
@LaurierEdu Thanks for your reply! I do think the points you made for the positives are valid however I think in terms of children using social media it can have many more negative affects in terms of cyber bullying and social isolation!
@JuliaChEM203 My first response is: there's a lot of social media. Specifics are kind of useful to think about with this. Specifics of Service, specifics of device, specifics of people, specifics of intention.
