TFW’s were essentially working illegally in Canada for 2 weeks, as the employer failed to tell the workers that they had lost status. The employer used their labour for 2 weeks without disclosing this important information with the workers

Employers feel they have the right to walk right into the locked houses of the TFW’s and go through all of their personal things, looking to take their passports and other belongings. This is completely wrong and should not be tolerated

Employers threaten the workers to either do the work in the unsafe conditions or be sent back home. The workers chose to stay an earn a living, even though their own health is at risk

The chemicals cause coughs, improper breathing habits, infected lungs etc. None of these things should be able to happen at a workspace, but they are. The workers have told the employers about the safety issues, but they turn a blind eye

TFW’s are being exposed to pesticides and chemicals at the farms they are working, an evident health and safety concern and violation

Workers are being sent home due to injuries they sustained on the job. Doctors suggested that they could continue light duty tasks, but employers push them to do more, sending them home if they refused

The one woman discussed how her varying hours created challenges, as some weeks she isn’t earning enough to pay for all of her expenses. She also said she cannot confront her employer, as nothing will be done or changed

Housing is suppose to be provided, but rent is being taken out of the workers’ pay checks. With 16 people living in one house, this is an extremely easy way for employers to increase their wealth and control

Exploration and mistreatment of vulnerable and oppressed workers can make other individuals very wealthy. This demonstrates aspecs, factors, realities and outcomes of our capitalistic system

The TFWP is suppose to be used to fill labour shortages that exist in Canada, but employers have been found accessing and using this program, as it allows them to have access to vulnerable workers, demonstrating their power, control and intimidation

The threat of being sent home, as well as the lack of enforcement and protection provided by federal and provincial governments in Canada creates further oppression and mistreatment for TFW

Employers are found saying, “we own you” to TFW, as they access and take their documents, passports etc. TFW are also paying into EI, even though they cannot access it

TFW are extremely vulnerable to employer abuse, as Canadian laws have been found to be very vague and provide very little protection

Even though the housing accommodations are awful, workers cannot make a compliant, as they would lose their job

A large emotional toll is also evident as the workers are very far away from their families. This makes it more difficult, as these workers not only miss their families, but have awful housing and work conditions as well

Migrant workers have to pay about $7,000 to come to Canada. This creates inequalities, as workers are bearing costs the companies and employers should be bearing. These workers are coming to Canada to earn a living, but are paying more than they are earning
