2020: General Assembly forced to begin broadcasting all proceedings during COVID

2025: The House begins archiving footage on its YouTube channel

2026: North Carolina Senate sessions are livestreamed on YouTube, but not archived

In the early days of State Affairs, @evanburns and I came across this Pew Research report that completely changed the way we understood the industry. Only ~850 full-time statehouse reporters exist in the entire United States. This was largely attributable to the demise of local media and newspapers, which were the predominant employers and sponsors for this kind of reporting.

This problem became one of our primary focuses as we built out the company. In order to better understand the legislative process, we needed people on the ground conducting non-partisan journalism. So, we started hiring our own reporters to fill that gap.

Today, @StateAffairsUS employs a full-time editorial staff of ~85 people and growing. These reporters spend each day at their respective state capitols, informing both readers and our AI-powered knowledge graph. With our model, we’re actively regrowing local statehouse reporting.

This is how we restore transparency to the democratic process.
