The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) organised a training workshop to equip Journalists with skills in Pests and Diseases Reporting on 24th and 25th March, 2025.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐨;
✅ Brief the media on new and emerging pest threats to Ugandan agriculture
✅ Equip the Journalists with essential skills in agriculture reporting with a focus on pests and diseases reporting
✅ Brief the media on pesticide products, registration and withdraw procedures
✅ Familiarise the Journalists with key international standards/treaties in agriculture
✅ Enhance collaboration between @MAAIF_Uganda and the media fraternity

✅ Journalists: Use your platforms to educate farmers and the public on emerging pest threats, available control measures, and the importance of scientific innovations in agriculture.

✅ Government and Stakeholders: Strengthen partnerships with the media to ensure timely, accurate, and research-backed information reaches communities to prevent and manage pest outbreaks.

✅ Farmers and the Public: Stay informed about pest threats, adopt recommended control measures, and actively engage with agricultural experts to protect livelihoods.

Today, participants are in Kayunga District engaging with farmers affected by Parthenium hysterophorus, an invasive weed hindering agricultural productivity.

𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬; Farmers who planted pineapples on 3 acres in 2023 have struggled to harvest as expected due to this aggressive weed, which:
❌ Grows rapidly and spreads widely
❌ Stunts crop growth and reduces soil fertility
❌ Resists chemical control, making eradication difficult

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞;
According to Ann Bulya, District Agricultural Officer, Kayunga, measures have been introduced to support farmers, including:
✅ Awareness campaigns via radio and TV
✅ Community training in schools etc
✅ Provision of herbicides

𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧; Farmers and stakeholders are urged to join efforts in tackling invasive species through awareness, reporting new infestations, & adopting best management practices. #OpenGovUg

As we work to restore our forests, floral invasive species pose a major challenge, outcompeting native plants and disrupting ecosystems. How can we strike a balance between regeneration and biodiversity conservation?

At the ongoing Workshop on Management of Invasive Species organised by @ASARECA, Dr. Moreen Uwimbabazi, a Forest Ecologist from National Forestry Resources Research Institute presented measures being taken to manage invasive species;
✅ Eradication
✅ Assisted regeneration (plant fast growing tree species)
✅ Community sensitisation

Recommendations;
✅ Scientific based interventions
✅ Turn waste into wealth (Harness the positive attributes of these invasive species)
✅ Integrated invasive management
