When we went into the 2022 elections, we had inherited the ills of the Uhuru regime. We gave away that election because Ruto became the face of certain issues you had always campaigned on—issues like a better cost of living. You could not talk about corruption because you were now working with a corrupt regime.

Just before the handshake, we had been on the streets fighting for certain reforms. We were fighting to reform the IEBC, arguing that, as it was constituted, it could not oversee a fair election. We abandoned these issues when you shook hands with Uhuru, and we went back to an election with the IEBC as it was—despite our protests.

This week you intimated that we should dialogue. Why should we dialogue over a skyrocketing cost of living or the wastage of public resources by the current regime? Why should we dialogue over the brute force used by the police against people exercising their constitutional right to protest? Why should we dialogue over the ostentatious display of wealth by politicians? Why should we dialogue over an inaccessible healthcare system, joblessness, and the uncertainty of the future for young Kenyans?

I have admired your resilience and fight. I have voted in two elections by virtue of universal suffrage, and in both, I voted for you because I believed in your reform credentials. I believed in you as one of the principled politicians in this country. I believed in your ability to build institutions that can outlive individuals. How can I reconcile those beliefs when you change tune to support a kleptocracy?

Are you compromising your principles and belief in a better Kenya for the AUC position? Do you have to go to the AUC even if it means turning a blind eye to the excesses of this regime?
