@EmPeeKay76 Genuine question, what part of the CTA allows the return of Asylum Seekers? I understand there is a clause that allows the return of people without correct documents, but does that apply to someone claiming asylum, and as they aren't UK Citizens does the UK have to accept back?
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats I don't think we are going to agree on this, and I appreciate where you are coming from. But a UI simply isn't covered by existing assumptions, and if it happens, the UK will prioritise minimising it's long term costs, which is not going to be that the existing rules applying
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats I'm asking if you see this as a general rule, which would apply if say Catalonia split from Spain. I suspect the Spanish wouldn't agree, so why do you think it applies here. On the constitution my point is there isn't one, so on what basis are you so certain of the outcome
@KevinPMeagher@5h4k35p34r31@Mark_lav@shockproofbeats After all, I can't see how "We can pay billions in pensions to citizens of a different country (With a higher GDP per capita) instead of paying that into the NHS" works as a political position in the UK..
@KevinPMeagher@5h4k35p34r31@Mark_lav@shockproofbeats You've linked to a set of rules the UK Gov regularly changes, and which don't apply to a completely different situation hasn't happened in 50+ years. No-one seems to want to explain why the UK Gov would agree to this, and not just change the rules..
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats The UK has changed for example whether it uprates payments to those abroad, and there is simply no constitutional right to keep paying. Flip it around, if say Catalonia split, would you be telling Spain it should continue paying state pensions?
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats Strange that my pension age has changed quite a few times since I started paying then. There is no such legal obligation on UK Gov, as WASPI proved, only a need to notify of changes in good time, which is what they did when this was brought up in the context of Scotland.
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats I'd argue the opposite, occupational pensions are paid into by government employees, and their is more of a. obligation in this case to pay. But state pensions are paid from current NI contributions, if NI isn't paying into the pot, it shouldn't be withdrawing out.
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats Nope, I'm suggesting that outside of Government pensions (Such as Teachers, were there is an argument for the UK to continue paying) that the state pension across all a UI would be paid by UI.
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats UK citizens paying the pensions of 1m+ people for the next 50+ years (Based on people who have just entered the job market now are paying NI and won't retire for 40+ years) isn't politically tenable...
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats If NI votes for a UI ( and I believe this is inevitable ) then the citizens aren't part of the UK. This isn't the same as moving abroad, as much as you want to pretend it is
@Mark_lav@cassiday_james@KevinPMeagher@shockproofbeats So your asking people in one country with a significantly lower GDP per capita (Against even a UI) to transfer significant wealth, while UI refuses to take any share of the liabilities, for example a share of COVID debts.
@peter_mcgahan@JohnDoyleDCU So you proposal is that a UI would actually decrease the % spend on defence. Interesting assumption given what's happening on the EU's doorstep. Sound a lot like having your cake and eating it...
@JohnDoyleDCU So Ireland with a significantly larger area geographic area to patrol, and a larger population will see no increase in defence spending? Seems like a big assumption to make...
@JohnDoyleDCU On what basis is their no legal liability for a share of UK Debt. A boy insignificant chunk for example is linked to the recent COVID issues, are you suggesting their is no obligation to take a % of that on?
