This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began.
From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event.
Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.
I’ve spent many weeks doing fieldwork in Tibet, sitting above these enormous, deeply incised Himalayan river systems and seeing firsthand just how geologically active this landscape is.
So spare me the climate-change grift every time a natural disaster strikes.
Catastrophic glacial outburst floods are not new. The 1981 Zhangzangbo GLOF released ~20 million m³ of water and debris into Nepal, with estimated peak discharge approaching 16,000 m³/s. The Himalayas experienced enormous GLOFs long before today's atmospheric CO₂ concentrations.
If it happened naturally in the past, we should expect it to happen naturally again in the future—regardless of atmospheric CO₂.
Turning a horrific loss of life into an immediate climate-change narrative without demonstrating that CO₂ caused this particular event isn't attribution. It's opportunism.
And the people exploiting tragedy to do it are grifters.

Captured by the survivors on film was and extremely rare opportunity to witness a "Glacier Erratic" on the move.
This massive boulder pushed by the forces will soon rest in place isolated and alone. We have mostly only seen the echoes of this left in place from the end of the last glacial maximum some 20K years ago.
They often sit atop other smaller rocks giving the impression of being placed by man and being confused with Dolmens.
But now we have the visual record to process them with clarity.

In 1948, a 32-year-old at Bell Labs published a paper nobody fully understood.
Engineers found it too mathematical. Mathematicians found it too engineering-focused. One prominent mathematician reviewed it negatively.
That paper - "A Mathematical Theory of Communication", became the founding document of the digital age.
The man was Claude Shannon. Father of Information Theory.
At 21, he wrote the most important master's thesis of the 20th century.
Working at MIT on an early mechanical computer, Shannon noticed its relay switches had exactly two states - open or closed. He had just taken a philosophy course introducing Boolean algebra, which also operated on two values: true and false.
Nobody had ever connected these two things.
His 1937 thesis proved that Boolean algebra and electrical circuits are mathematically identical, and that any logical operation could be built from simple switches.
Howard Gardner called it "possibly the most important, and also the most famous, master's thesis of the century."
Every digital computer ever built traces back to this insight.
At 29, he proved that perfect encryption exists.
During WWII, Shannon worked on classified cryptography at Bell Labs. His work contributed to SIGSALY, the secure voice system used for confidential communications between Roosevelt and Churchill.
In a classified 1945 memorandum, he mathematically proved the one-time pad provides perfect secrecy, unbreakable not just computationally, but provably, permanently, against an adversary with infinite power.
When declassified in 1949, it transformed cryptography from an art into a science. It laid the foundations for DES, AES, and every modern encryption standard.
At 32, he defined what information is.
His 1948 paper introduced one equation:
H = −Σ p(x) log p(x)
Shannon entropy. The average uncertainty in a probability distribution. The minimum bits required to encode a message.
Three things followed:
> He defined the bit - the fundamental unit of all information. His colleague John Tukey coined the name.
> He proved the channel capacity theorem, every communication channel has a maximum rate of reliable transmission. You can approach it. You can never exceed it.
> He unified telegraph, telephone, and radio into a single mathematical framework for the first time.
Robert Lucky of Bell Labs called it the greatest work "in the annals of technological thought."
Where his equation lives in AI today:
Cross-entropy loss - the function training every classifier and language model, is derived directly from H. Decision tree splits use information gain, which is H applied to data. Perplexity, the standard LLM evaluation metric, is an exponentiation of cross-entropy.
Every time a neural network trains, Shannon's formula runs inside it.
He also built the first AI learning device.
In 1950, Shannon built Theseus, a mechanical mouse that navigated a maze through trial and error, learned the correct path, and repeated it perfectly. Mazin Gilbert of Bell Labs said: "Theseus inspired the whole field of AI."
That same year he published the first paper on programming a computer to play chess. He co-organized the 1956 Dartmouth Workshop, the founding event of AI as a field.
The man:
He rode a unicycle through Bell Labs hallways while juggling. He built a flame-throwing trumpet, a rocket-powered Frisbee, and Styrofoam shoes to walk on the lake behind his house.
He called his home Entropy House.
When asked what motivated him: "I was motivated by curiosity. Never by the desire for financial gain. I just wondered how things were put together."
In 1985, he appeared unexpectedly at a conference in Brighton. The crowd mobbed him for autographs. Persuaded to speak at the banquet, he talked briefly, then pulled three balls from his pockets and juggled instead.
One engineer said: "It was as if Newton had showed up at a physics conference."
He died in 2001 after a decade with Alzheimer's, the cruel irony of information slowly leaving the mind of the man who defined what information was.
Claude, the AI model, is named after Claude Shannon, the mathematician who laid the foundation for the digital world we rely on today.
Your body fat is a water supply. Burn 100 grams of it and you manufacture 107 grams of water in the process, which is the entire reason a camel's hump is fat rather than a tank.
Nothing else on you does this. Glycogen is a wet fuel, dragging around three grams of water for every gram of itself, which is why the first four pounds off any diet are a plumbing event rather than a result. Fat is the dry fuel. It arrives with the water folded into the molecule and releases it on combustion. A kangaroo rat lives its whole life in a desert and never drinks. It eats seeds and it burns fat, and that is the whole trick.
You run the identical reaction. Metabolic water is roughly a tenth of your daily turnover before you have been anywhere near a tap.
So somebody finally measured what happens when the tap is closed.

Which brings us to the two litre bottle sat on every desk in Britain, and the rule about eight glasses a day, which traces to a 1945 recommendation whose very next sentence pointed out that most of it arrives in your food. Somebody deleted that sentence and built an industry in the gap.

Drink when you are thirsty, and stop sipping through a fast like a man topping up a radiator. The reservoir is already fitted. It is sat on your waist, it has been there for two million years, and it opens when you leave it alone long enough to ask.
Texas has secured a landmark settlement with Albertsons Safeway LLC, ending the chain’s practice of misting USDA-certified organic produce with synthetic antimicrobial pesticides. The investigation, launched in January 2026, found that ProduceMaxx, an EPA registered antimicrobial pesticide containing hypochlorous acid, was being sprayed on organic produce in misting systems to control bacteria and extend shelf life. While ProduceMaxx is approved for certain food safety uses, it is not allowed on organic produce unless chlorine levels are below 4 parts per million or a water rinse is performed. Many consumers were unaware that organic fruits and vegetables had been treated, undermining the trust in organic labeling. All Albertsons-owned stores in Texas must stop using ProduceMaxx or similar misting chemicals on organic produce. The company committed to ceasing misting within 90 days and updating policies.
The settlement applies to all Albertsons-owned chains in the state, including: Albertsons Market, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, United Supermarkets, Market Street, United Express, Market Street Express and Amigos.
Albertsons should not only comply with this Texas settlement, the company needs to stop the illegal practice of spraying certified organic produce throughout all of its stores across the country. Are you an organic shopper that patrons Albertsons or any of its other branded chains outside of Texas? You need to raise hell with store management to make sure they're not doing this anywhere else in the U.S.

Nobody in America got sicker on the morning of 4 June 1998. Twenty-nine million of them went to bed a healthy weight and woke up overweight, because the NIH had moved the BMI line from 27.8 to 25 overnight.
That is the whole business model. Here is the headcount.
1994: a WHO panel invents osteopenia. Bone thinner than a young woman's, nowhere near thin enough to break. Half of all postmenopausal women qualify on the spot.
1998: the overweight threshold drops to 25. Twenty-nine million new patients. Not one of them gained a pound.
2001: the cholesterol panel publishes ATP III. Americans recommended a statin go from 13 million to 36 million. Twenty-three million new customers in one afternoon.
2003: the blood pressure committee invents prehypertension. A diagnosis for people whose blood pressure is normal. Forty-five million qualify on day one.
2013: the statin guideline is rewritten. Another 12.8 million eligible, almost all over sixty, none with heart disease. Eight of the nine men who wrote it were on the payroll of statin manufacturers, disclosed only when they were forced to.
2017: hypertension moves from 140 over 90 to 130 over 80. The share of American adults labelled hypertensive jumps from 32 per cent to 46. Thirty-one million people, before lunch.
2026: the new cholesterol guideline lands in March. Another 21.5 million eligible, total now 87.5 million. The people it just added carry an average ten-year risk of 3.1 per cent. Which is to say, almost none.
Not one of those was a discovery about the human body. Every one was a decision about where to draw a line on a chart, taken in a room, by a show of hands.
And note the direction. Thirty years, four organ systems, and the line has never once moved back. No panel has ever sat down, reviewed the last panel's work, and handed several million people their health back.
Over 140 million reclassifications in a single country. A woman of sixty-eight can sit on four of those lines at once and be four kinds of ill without a single symptom, on five tablets, for a body that is doing exactly what a sixty-eight-year-old body does.
A cure is capped by the number of people who have the disease.
A threshold is capped by the population.

This paper is trying to do something broader than simply explain why red or infrared light may improve mitochondrial function. What we are proposing is that sunlight itself may be part of the normal physical environment in which metabolism operates.
The simplest way I would put it is this:
Food supplies the energy for metabolism, but photons from sunlight may help regulate how efficiently that energy moves through mitochondria.
That distinction is important. We are not suggesting that humans or animals are photosynthetic, or that sunlight replaces calories. Rather, we are asking whether photons—particularly in the infrared range—can subtly influence the kinetics of mitochondrial reactions: in other words, the speed and probability with which electrons move through the mitochondrial electron transport chain. 🧵
