CO₂ emissions had a big drop in 2020 (-5.4%) & big increase in 2021 (+4.3%), but the atmospheric increase in CO₂ was bigger in 2020 (2.4ppm vs 2.0ppm)!

First look at SO₂ in the Jan 15 #eruption cloud measured by @eumetsat MetOp/GOME-2. So far, the SO₂ columns do not appear to be extreme; generally <20 Dobson Units (DU). For a Pinatubo-scale event we'd expect SO₂ columns >100 DU. More data soon.

Looks like the (now small) shockwave from today’s volcanic eruption in Tonga recently passed over the @UniofReading weather observatory, as measured by the sudden change in atmospheric pressure.
Every year we forecast the CO2 rise based on our emissions and forecast climate conditions. 2022 will see an increase of 2.14 ppm, and annual average at Mauna Loa of 418.3ppm.
