if police kept this city safe, we wouldn't have so much violence. we have such a large police budget. a quarter of the cities budget is obscene. put that money into infrastructure and social services. defund the police. abolish them. they do not help
There is so much violence happening in Winnipeg. The instinct, often understandable, is to call for more police, security, etc.
But police and security cannot be everywhere at once and almost always only respond after harm has occurred - and, further, often escalate this harm.
@PrematureTantie it hasn't happened in a while but for a long time i couldn't sleep when my stuffed toys were facing me bc i felt like they were watching me. i still slept with my teddy bear tho.
one time, i woke up to use the bathroom and when i got back my bears eyes were facing me and i
@amberying i'm not sure either haha (are you looking for a discussion about why this could be or just commenting? i'm Autistic and like thought experiments but not everyone does so i wanted to check ☺️)
@JingoTheHyena@torako_tiger i really appreciated the way you worded this. it made something click for me, especially bc ppl use "tantrum" for children which always seemed off to me
@the_tweedy i do this a lot. my friends and i pause movies often to discuss it. sometimes we can't finish a movie in one day bc we keep pausing to talk about either production, or the implications to the story a single line/outfit/etc
@Fawst @ChrisFictionFan @cheemaprod @Variety there's been a rise in franchise films over the past few decades and studios are trying to capitalize on the popularity of characters/pre-existing work so less non-franchise work gets made bc they can't bank on a move star to bring ppl to the theatre
@Fawst @ChrisFictionFan @cheemaprod @Variety Marvel is a studio tho and those execs are making those decisions. as i understand the issue, many older Hollywood stars are still a draw, but it's harder to become a 'movie star' bc so many people focus on the characters instead. it's not exclusively Marvel's fault,
@fluidfyre i miss going to the movies and having a shared experience with strangers.
i miss going to a cafe to read or study.
i struggled to get involved with organizing for other reasons before the pandemic, but i miss being able to try attending in person organizing events
