In the wild, a rabbit lying on its side is an easy meal. It can't fight back. Its only defense is running, and it can't run lying down. So when two pet rabbits sleep squished on top of each other, each one has handed its life to the other and fallen asleep anyway.
Rabbits are born scared. They sit near the bottom of the food chain, and they spend their whole lives watching for something that wants to eat them. They even hide their own pain, because in the wild, looking weak gets you killed. For an animal built like that, leaning against another body with its eyes shut is about the most trusting thing it can do.
It starts with grooming. Two bonded rabbits will lick each other's faces and ears for ages, and it makes both of them feel good, the one doing the licking and the one getting licked. They usually finish flopped out side by side, loose and still.
And none of this is quick. You can't just stick two rabbits in a cage and expect them to fall in love. Strangers will fight, sometimes badly enough to hurt each other. So people introduce them slowly, over weeks, on fresh ground that neither one sees as home, in short little meetups that get longer over time. It can take three months. Some pairs never click. The bond has to be earned, on the rabbit's own clock, and you can't speed it up.
Once they're bonded, they barely leave each other's side. They eat together, sleep in one warm pile, and groom each other every day. Rescue groups say a bonded pair should never be split up. If one has to go to the vet, the other goes along too, in the same carrier, so neither of them is ever alone.
Then one of them dies. The one left behind will sniff the body, nudge it, groom it, and climb on top of it the way it did every night, waiting for its friend to wake up. Rescues tell owners to leave the body with the living rabbit for a few hours, alone and in private, because a rabbit that never sees its partner's body will hunt around the house for weeks, looking for a friend that is never coming home. Most of them grieve for weeks: they go quiet, hide away, and lose interest in food. A rabbit that spent its whole life next to someone is rarely fully happy on its own again.
So look again at two rabbits asleep on top of each other. Each one has given up its only escape, the ability to run, and trusted the other to keep watch while it sleeps. That is what the cuddling means.
