I know I'm screaming into the void, but I know people who were born in this country who don’t appreciate what they have, because they’ve either never been anywhere else, or they haven’t paid close attention to how things are under the surface in other places. Or because they don’t settle for anything less than perfection. Our Founding Fathers recognized this wasn’t about perfection, but about striving for a more perfect union.
In this country's 250th birthday, I have to say, I hear immigrants are the ones who appreciate America the most. I don’t know if that’s true. All I know is that I’m extremely grateful to this country for showing me all the doors, even if I’m the one who has to walk through them alone (yes, a Matrix reference).
I’ve been to 35 countries and lived in 4, so I’ve been lucky to always have options. But I've also seen a lot. I never had any particular intention of leaving Chile, but in the late ‘90s, when two Silicon Valley companies were competing to hire me while I was 6,500 miles away, I didn’t have any doubt I wanted to come here. Of course, being in love with the woman who became my wife was a pretty powerful incentive, too. ;-)
The Beatles would not have existed if it hadn’t been for Elvis Presley, who inspired them. Some of the best Americana-style albums were made by Dire Straits, Scottish guys who were inspired by America. Should I keep going? A-ha (Norwegian). Van Morrison (Irish). Neil Young (Canadian). Elvis Costello (English)… (yeah, I'm a genXer, proudly)
My biggest hero of all time, both in movies and in politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger, saw the promise of this country and had the courage to pursue it. His Netflix documentary is a must-watch.
Some say the game is rigged. Yes, it’s a lot harder today to go from zero to one. But I know people who do it every day. Yes, the powerful and connected have unfair advantages (haven't they always?), but this country still rewards people who are willing to take risks, work hard, and create something of value. It’s not guaranteed, and it’s certainly not perfect. But the opportunities are still here for those willing to chase them.
Being a movie buff, that's why I choose to watch "Olympus Has Fallen" tonight. Not because of the desecration of the symbols, but for what comes after, a renewed sense of unity, and because that's where heroes come from.
I’m grateful that, all those years ago, I decided to walk through one of those doors. Happy 250 Birthday, America!
Youngsters never understood why our 1982 version of Dune was "better".
It was the culture around it. It was the Toto music. It was Sting, it was our parent's heroes were there too (Mel Ferrer). It was Dino di Laurentis. A super-production. Not just another thing to forget about. And of course the hottest mama of her day.
The modern version was "sterile". Plain. Boring. Well executed and acted, but flat in every way a movie can be flat...
@coinbureau Textbook regulatory capture.
Call your reps. They're clueless. If enough people tell them this is BS and you will fund their opponent they'll pay attention
@quxiaoyin I read 3 AI papers a day, in full. The greatest majority of researchers, in the US, Europe or Asia are from China. Real scientists are advancing knowledge for everyone. I don't care where they were born. Kudos to them!
@LucasSa56947288 So what. He's been a great professional in his career. I disagree with his views, but that's what it means to live in a free society. Get over it.
@unusual_whales Shoehorn politics theory has always been correct. The extreme left and extreme right are a lot more similar than what they'd like to acknowledge...
@AndrewYang I was with you on day one. But going third party was a non-starter. It never works. Figure you allies (with money) first. I've always loved your ideals and your tactics back then. Now, not so sure. You have more selling to do...
Mermaids are the most interesting mythological creatures. What were those men thinking when they conceived them?
On the surface, a call, temptation, t*ts, then the cold reality: she’s just a fish. Is that so quintessential to men throughout the ages?
@araseb_ I've been coding for almost 40 years. I used Fable 5 (until today) and it's awesome, but it's still an intern.
Systems thinking is the real moat. GenAI hasn't yet been able to truly *understand* systems as a whole.
LeCun and @GaryMarcus have always been right.
"AI" != "GenAI"
@EastEndJoe This is so outdated. I'm not there yet, but (proudly) 58.
I run 4 companies, CTO of 2. Seat on several boards. People pay me for my advice. My hero is Warren. He actually retired at 94.
There are many, many more like me.
