Hi! Name's Lucile, I've been working in the games industry for 18+ years, 10 of which as a freelance translator and L10N consultant. Here are some of my credited projects! #MeetTheTranslator
Scroll down to find most of the #gameloc-related threads I've published over the years:
@pumpkin_link@ratatan_game In this case, it looks like this was done by a team with limited to no experience and no LQA (https://t.co/pp43Koh639), so some jank is expected. Hopefully @ratatan_game can use this as a learning experience.
@pumpkin_link@ratatan_game This person does exist, you can look them up on LinkedIn. However, be aware that 99% of the time, translators have ZERO access to the game while they're translating. If they ask questions to the dev team and don't receive answers, all you get is their best guess.
@thecollegehill They used to indeed, but Valve is now working with teams of professionals to localize all of Steam's content (UI, official news, as well as their own games) because they recognize the importance of having proper translations.
Lifehack: To avoid digging through mountains of slop, look up which demos are localized by professionals. When it comes to cutting corners with AI, translation is usually #1 on the list, so if it's done properly, you can be sure there's little to no slop in the code/art/etc.
Next Fest is back, with a new and improved UI for all your browsing needs! From now until October 26th, check out thousands (literally) of demos for games of all types - from frantic cooking typers to frozen railway games, there's something for everyone.

@thetchuck I'm not telling anyone how to do anything, I'm saying that people who want to avoid any kind of AI can start by looking up the first thing that's usually slashed in favor of AI. What you do with that information is up to you.
Since this is doing numbers for some reason, if you're interested in getting your game a proper loc, here are some free resources:

@MolodyGs Translations can involve anything from technical bits (UI, settings, etc.), to narrative content (dialogues, lore books), marketing, etc. - The overwhelming majority of translators want nothing to do with machine translation or AI. More on that: https://t.co/jh9V4NIbUR
@TranquiGames Also, I would highly advise against having people (fans or pro alike) proofread AI output - much like asking a writer or artist to edit AI drafts, it almost always ends up being a complete waste of time and brain cells. More on this: https://t.co/jh9V4NIbUR
@TranquiGames I understand where you're coming from, but you only get one chance at making a first impression, and using AI translation is the best way to tell your audience "you're not worth investing into, so here are the scraps". Fan translation is actually a preferable approach, imo
@Ashsh178545@Weston_Mitchell As for story-heavy games, I agree that this isn't doable if you have a shoestring budget, but that's why plenty of devs only localize into 1-2 languages until they get more budget. Either way, it doesn't cost anything to request a quote from reputable loc studios, who can also...
@Weston_Mitchell I agree to some extent, but by that logic, a lot of people also can't afford art assets, music etc. - there are ways to get your game localized for a relatively affordable price, especially for loc studios that are tailored towards indies.
@FernandoDante It is indeed a very hard specialization to break into, especially in recent times. If you're looking for some tips, here's a piece I wrote on the topic a couple of years ago: https://t.co/xX59Y3R6bV
Happy to introduce the Gameloc Portfolio Directory on Loc'd and Loaded! Much like its Agency counterpart, this project allows translators working in games, manga, anime etc. to showcase their portfolios, free of algorithmic biases: https://t.co/R7O75Bkjy2
