You know what I love about @Facebook’s blind email notifications telling you there’s new content on Facebook but not showing you that content? Nothing. It’s a disgusting user-hostile anti-pattern that responsible content sites outgrew in the 2000s. Grow up, Zuck.
@wespennest Good question.
Yes, you should archive important messages before deleting them.
But, TODOs? Not necessary: you will anyway get email reminders in the next days (tasks not worthy of being reminded about are also not so important to keep them around cluttering your inbox).
How to go down to #inbox#zero every day, guaranteed:
1. reply to incoming mails the best you can during the day
2. before you go home at night, delete everything in your inbox
3. people who did not get an answer should just resend their mails the next day
Email got so many things so right that we're still unpacking its brilliance four decades later. Long-form and asynchronous, email is an ace medium for fully considered thoughts. Not knee-jerk, instant reactions. We lost sight of that due to chaff.
When you realize that after the latest corporate look redesign you are still getting those forms to be filled out sent around as email attachment, but now they include the cool new logo and your write answers with fancy new fonts.

(The email you put off responding to since you want to give it your full attention - and thus never answer, giving the sender the impression you don't care, when in fact it's the most important thing in your inbox.)
2004: pay to get one of those @gmail invitations and enjoy the infinite inbox experience with unlimited storage space growing every second.
2018: finally run out of space after your @gmail inbox hits 15GB and pay $$$ to keep your email address working.

I wrote a little ode to email, which has revealed itself over time to be better designed than Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Slack, Medium, and whatever you are using after abandoning email. https://t.co/zyAH7ETFC2
