Special Tribunal Orders Return of Five Luxury Cars Seized from Alleged R2billion Tembisa Hospital Looting Kingpin Hangwani Maumela

The vehicles include two 2023 Aston Martins, a 2021 Ferrari 812, a 2018 Ferrari 488GTB, and a 2023 Rolls-Royce.

The Special Tribunal has ordered the release of five luxury vehicles seized from alleged Tembisa Hospital looting kingpin Hangwani Maumela’s Sandton home and a Mpumalanga dealership. The cars, including two Aston Martins, two Ferraris, and a Rolls-Royce, were taken by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in October 2025 as part of its R2 billion corruption investigation.

Judge Margaret Victor ruled that the vehicles be returned to Omar’s Motor Den in Mpumalanga, subject to security equal to each car’s market value. The vehicles include two 2023 Aston Martins, a 2021 Ferrari 812, a 2018 Ferrari 488GTB, and a 2023 Rolls-Royce. The dealership must also insure the vehicles and seek approval for any sale.

The SIU raised concerns over the legitimacy of ownership transfers, noting significant price discounts and irregular sales. Investigations revealed some cars were registered under proxies linked to Maumela, and payments were routed through a company controlled by him. Despite the tribunal’s ruling, the SIU maintains that the assets’ value remains safeguarded while the main forfeiture proceedings continue.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed the ruling does not affect the unit’s mandate. Preservation orders remain in place to protect state assets during ongoing investigations into Maumela and the alleged syndicate. The unit will continue probing Tembisa Hospital procurement irregularities and recoveries, while ownership questions and discounted transaction concerns will be tested in the main proceedings.
