Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary (Textiles) held a series of high-level engagements with leading French and global business houses, including CHANEL’s le19M, Okaïdi, Monoprix, Cerulean Global, LVMH and Galeries Lafayette, during her visit to Paris.

Discussions focused on strengthening India–France partnerships in textile and apparel sourcing, luxury craftsmanship, sustainable manufacturing, design innovation, artisan-led value chains and product development.

Secretary highlighted India’s unique strengths across the textile value chain—from handlooms, embroidery and natural fibres to apparel, home textiles, handicrafts and sustainable manufacturing—and invited deeper engagement with Indian manufacturers, artisan clusters and design institutions.

The meetings opened new avenues for positioning India not only as a sourcing destination, but as a global partner in creativity, craftsmanship, sustainability and value creation.

✨ Strengthening Textiles Through Smart & Sustainable Packaging! 🧵

Smt. Vrunda Manohar Desai, IRS, Textile Commissioner, Government of India, Mumbai, inaugurated the two-day Training Programme on “Packaging of Textiles” at Deendayal Hastakala Sankul (Trade Facilitation Centre), Varanasi.

The programme is jointly organised by the Office of the Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP).

The inaugural session witnessed the presence of Shri Kartikey Dhandha, Secretary (Textiles), Government of Uttar Pradesh; Smt. Kusum, Deputy Director, Handloom, Government of Uttar Pradesh; faculty members from NIFT Varanasi; officials from the Office of the Textile Commissioner and IIP; representatives of government support institutions, industry associations, exporters, weavers and entrepreneurs from the Varanasi textile cluster.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Desai emphasised that packaging is no longer merely the final step in the textile value chain, but a key enabler of product protection, branding, value addition and access to global markets.

She highlighted the importance of eco-friendly, sustainable and innovative packaging solutions, including the potential of new-age and natural fibres. She also spoke about the TSRS Portal, data-driven planning, the roadmap towards USD 100 billion textile exports by 2030, TEEM, promotion of natural fibres, sustainability, traceability and opportunities arising from recent FTAs.

The outcomes of this pilot programme will be monitored regularly, with the potential for replication across the country based on its success.

Shri Kartikey Dhandha also highlighted the establishment of the Textile Export Facilitation Centre at Varanasi and its potential to strengthen market linkages and strengthen the export ecosystem of the Varanasi textile cluster.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Sanjay Charak, Regional Officer, Noida.

A significant step forward for the India–France textile partnership.

The Bharat Tex Trade Federation (BTTF) and Première Vision SA exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding in Paris on 2 September 2026, in the presence of the Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary,Textiles.

The MOU was exchanged by Dr. A. Sakthivel, Core Committee Member, BTTF, and Ms. Florence Rousson, Chief Executive Officer, Fashion Division, Première Vision.

Phase 2 aims to onboard 300 organisations and develop over 3,000 Digital Product Passports (DPPs) in the next six months, strengthening traceability, sustainability and global market readiness for Indian textile exporters, particularly MSMEs.
