I’ve been thinking about the state of the space and who’s still standing—this was inspired by @vasiamakris’s space last week.
Right now, the digital art market is split into four key categories:
1️⃣ Aggregated marketplaces – OpenSea, Rarible, Highlight. Primarily for secondary sales, though Highlight is pushing new models. Most collectors still default to OpenSea.
2️⃣ Creator-owned minting & tooling – Manifold, Transient Labs, Highlight. These platforms give artists full control over their releases, allowing them to set the terms, pricing, and structure without relying on a third-party marketplace.
3️⃣ Curated marketplaces – SuperRare, Ninfa. These platforms offer prestige and discovery but come with higher fees (often 15%+).
4️⃣ Curated exhibitions & platforms – Art Blocks, Fellowship, Braindrops, Verse, TLx by Transient Labs. These act as digital galleries, fostering deeper partnerships between artists and curators to push innovation.
The recent shutdown of MakersPlace is a tough blow—they led the charge in bridging digital art with traditional spaces and handled physicals masterfully.
IMO, artists should aim for a mix of Categories 2-4 depending on their goals.
• Editions? Mint them yourself via The Lab, Manifold, or Highlight (Cat 2).
• 1/1s? Sell via your own auction page (p.s. auctions are coming to @TransientLabs next month) or list on SuperRare/Ninfa (Cat 2-3).
• Major releases? Ideally, aim for a curated exhibition like Art Blocks or TLx (Cat 4)—but this requires a strong track record in crypto or traditional art + an engaged collector base.
Long-term thinking is key. Collectors are fatigued; they want to be part of a story, not just a transaction.
Some artists take the Sam Spratt approach—one massive drop per year.
Others build a steady cadence: 🟡 Q1: Edition 🟠 Q2: A small series of 1/1s 🔴 Q3: A major curated drop ⚫️ Q4: A final 1/1 or small edition
imo the most successful creators have a throughline in their work—a cohesive catalog that builds over time, making collectors feel part of something bigger than just a single piece.
