#TechTuesday Dr. Dheeraj Venkata Sai Kavuri and Prof. Sarith P. Sathian from the Department of Applied Mechanics, @iitmadras, have developed a groundbreaking method to achieve thermal rectification (TR) in monolayer graphene using strain gradients—offering dynamic control over both the TR ratio and direction.
Their study explores:
Compressive strain gradient (CSGG): Heat flows from highly compressed to less compressed regions.
Tensile strain gradient (TSGG): The TR direction flips with system size—smaller systems show heat flow from high to low strain, while larger systems reverse this trend.
Changing the location of the strain gradient allows tuning the direction of TR, adding another layer of control.
To enhance performance further, they introduced a series thermal rectifier by coupling strained graphene with asymmetric defective graphene (ADG)—leading to a significant increase in TR effectiveness.
This method is not just theoretical—it’s experimentally feasible and could pave the way for advanced thermal logic circuits, phononic devices, and efficient heat management systems in nanoscale electronics and sensor technology.
A major step forward in 2D materials research and thermal engineering—proudly from IIT Madras.

ISRO achieves major breakthrough in Semicryogenic Engine development
ISRO has achieved a major breakthrough in the Semicryogenic development programme with the first successful hot test of the intermediate configuration of the 2000kN Semicryogenic engine, designated as Power Head Test Article (PHTA) at ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri today. The PHTA test validated the integrated performance of all the engine systems like turbopumps, pre-burner, start-system, and control components except for the thrust chamber. The test went in accordance with the predictions and the engine parameters are as expected. The excellent performance of the PHTA and the dedicated Semicryogenic Integrated Engine Test facility have given confidence to progress further with a series of tests to validate the engine systems before realizing the fully integrated engine. This success was achieved through a systematic test programme starting from the single element level under various test conditions and trials. We are now closer to the much coveted technology of high thrust Semicryogenic propulsion system, which will enhance the payload of the LVM3 launch vehicle from 4 tonnes to more than 5 tonnes to GTO.
