How can the media be trusted, or claim to be impartial, when they are on the government payroll?

Nine sent Reid Butler to the United States to sit down with a KKK leader and try to smear One Nation. That same organisation has taken nearly $8 million in taxpayer wage subsidies through Labor’s Journalism Assistance Fund.

Over $8 million to Fairfax Media Limited (SMH, The Age, AFR) and nearly $6 million to Seven.

The so-called women’s platforms are no better. Women’s Agenda and Mamamia are two of the biggest women’s news sites in the country.

On Tickle v Giggle - the most important sex-based rights case this country has seen this century - they have been silent or disparaging.

Coincidence? Or is it the $214,500 Women’s Agenda and the $268,000 Mamamia just collected from the same Labor grant scheme?

And millions to publications in multi-cultural communities, the communities that polls show vote heavily in favour of Labor.

Then there are the local outfits. The Manly Observer’s Kim Smee has received more than $100,000. On a podcast in 2022, she said she wrote her thesis on the rise of extreme far right parties and One Nation.

How can we trust that media outlets taking government money to cover core news are impartial?

One grant in particular is so dubious I am keeping it for a separate reel.

Any organisation on this list that is receiving government funds can no longer, in my view, be relied upon as impartial. The fourth estate is now just another arm of government.

That is why so many of us are so distrustful.

Government should not be involved in funding media.

If a media outlet cannot afford to fund itself, then they should not rely on the taxpayer to keep them afloat.
