@Lakerschipp I feel the same way, but I feel like the thinking behind Carr is drafting the best available. I like the pick. Projected lottery talent and lots of potential
The THREE layers of EVERY move/bag/tool in an offensive bag.
1. GRAVITY - if you can’t shoot you can’t CREATE space, you have to TAKE space. Shooting supercedes everything gravity related; footwork is how you TAKE space.
2. CHANGE OF PACE- being able to handle is good, but it’s inteffective at one speed. Stopping and starting must be layered into every move you practice off of the bounce. Speed skills in football, change of pace kills in basketball.
3. DECISION MAKING - this comes down to limiting cognitive load to answer questions with the basketball. Is this is a single or double gap? Best available shot? Low man? Mismatch? Coverage? Coverage solution?
- DECIDE the right move in terms of shot quality for the TEAM
- DECIDE the type of advantage I have or can create
- DECIDE if my gravity allows me the freedom to CREATE space or limits it to TAKING space
This sounds like a lot to master, especially in 0.5 seconds of receiving the ball.
- Automating as much of the game as you can frees up cognitive load to problem solve
- Automation is largely acquired through CLA and SSGs in development.
Not as sexy as the IG reels we see, but exponentially more effective.

This is great stuff from the Thunder’s Head Coach - You never graduate from the basics
