In the liturgy, we are invited to participate — body, mind, and heart — and enter into a dimension inhabited by the Holy Spirit. In order to enter into this dimension, the liturgy is woven with signs and symbols that have a performative and transformative dimension. #GeneralAudience
Leading up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, the U.S. bishops will consecrate the nation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 11, the eve of the solemnity of the Sacred Heart. Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, Oregon, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty and a longtime Knight, recently spoke with Columbia about devotion to the Sacred Heart, the upcoming consecration of the United States and the role of religious liberty in American society. “Our hope is that greater charity will be exercised throughout our country, and that in the heart of Christ we will rediscover the unity that seems to be slipping away from us in today’s divisive culture,” he said. “That in the heart of Christ we will find ourselves to be friends again, even with those with whom we disagree.”

During the Rosary for peace in the Vatican Gardens, Pope Leo XIV reminded everyone present and praying around the world that all people must do their part to achieve peace. It must start with “small but important things, abstaining from every form of verbal or physical violence in daily life and also on social media.”

We live in an era marked by wars and growing polarization, as well as cultural and social divisions. Yet, in the midst of fragility, a new hope arises. Even as division seems to grow, a common denominator that indisputably unites us all appears: our shared humanity.

On the Solemnity of Pentecost, which brings the Easter season to its close, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, reflecting on the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of peace, mission, and truth. The Pope said the Paraclete continues to “enlighten minds and instill new vitality in our hearts,” transforming history and opening it to salvation. He reminded the faithful that the whole Church is called to bear witness to the Gospel with joy and hope. Concluding his homily, Pope Leo prayed that the Holy Spirit may save humanity from war, misery, and sin through the omnipotence of love.
Pope Leo on Pentecost Sunday:
"The Holy Spirit opens the doors of our hearts, helping us to overcome resistance, selfishness, mistrust, and prejudice, and enabling us to live as children of God and brothers and sisters to one another. Where the Spirit of the Lord is present, brotherhood arises among individuals, groups, and the peoples of the Earth, and all speak the one language of love, which unites and harmonizes diversity.
Brothers and sisters, even in our own day, especially on this day of Pentecost, we must invoke the Holy Spirit, so that He might open all the doors that still remain closed."
“Peace be with you.” — John 20:19
In today’s Gospel, the risen Jesus appears to His disciples, who are gathered in fear behind locked doors. He speaks peace into their anxiety, shows them His wounds, and breathes the Holy Spirit upon them.
From that moment, their fear is transformed into mission. They are sent to forgive, to heal, and to share the mercy they have received.
Christ comes to us in the same way, entering our fears, offering His peace, and sending us out with His Spirit.
🙏 Lord, fill us with Your peace, and make us instruments of Your mercy in the world.
