Some of the ultraleft seem to operate on the idea that we get One Shot--our moment is destined to arrive (you needn't worry) but it only comes once. Thus, the primary job of the left is building consensus around a perfect, maximalist platform while we wait for the big day.

Of course this has distinctly religious, eschatological overtones, but even setting that aside, it's just not how things work. The Day of Revolution is not preordained; for most people it never arrived.

But, also, the corollary of the "we have to maximize our One Shot" belief structure is they hate any kind of incremental win because they feel like it "blows" the One Shot. It's incredibly important to lose, lose, lose, lose, and lose riiiiiiight up until the Big Day arrives, and then win everything all at once--because you only get One Shot!

In reality, winning begets winning, and the more you win, the bigger your wins can be. Generally, you don't go from waiting and losing to suddenly winning everything. So those of us who are interested in winning "reformist" victories see it as a ladder to more, whereas the ultraleft sees it as a wall to slam into.

This isn't to say fanfic is a trove of high art, I just want to see a double blind study of people identifying "good" writing because I don't think they can
