California may have its highest odds of a tropical cyclone landfall in modern history this year, but odds still remain quite low for a true hurricane landfall.

Sea surface temperatures are well above normal across the entire eastern Pacific, extending up to Southern California. La Jolla reported a water temperature of 77.4°F yesterday.

Hurricanes typically need water of at least 80°F to sustain themselves, and waters that warm already exist several hundred miles south, along Baja California. Hurricane season is expected to rapidly ramp up across the eastern Pacific in the coming weeks, with increased odds of a hyperactive season due to El Niño.

In 2023, Hurricane Hilary was a Category 2 storm as it passed several hundred miles west of Cabo San Lucas and nearly came ashore as a tropical cyclone in SoCal.
This year, if a major hurricane tracks that same path with warmer waters in place, there's a better chance a storm could maintain tropical cyclone status as it moves into California. El Niño years also historically produce significantly more hurricanes in the eastern Pacific, raising the odds that one tracks toward California.

We're already seeing some impacts from tropical cyclones in California. Right now, the remnant moisture from Tropical Storm Elida is bringing increased humidity and even some light rain to parts of NorCal over the last day. That moisture is set to hit the Sierra Nevada, where heavy downpours leading to flash flooding are possible, with the National Weather Service issuing a flood watch for the eastern Sierra and Lake Tahoe.

At a minimum, expect more remnant hurricane moisture in California this year, along with an elevated, though still low chance of a tropical cyclone landfall in Southern California. California only sees a tropical cyclone landfall on average once a century, but recent research has found tropical cyclone rainfall is expected to increase in Southern California as a result of climate change.
