On July 26, 2020, 16-year-old Jamey Ruth Klassen of Guelph, Ontario was on a beach at Georgian Bay when she heard cries for help.

A 40-year-old man, Christopher G. Robertson, was in trouble after his kayak capsized and he sank beneath the surface of the lake.

Klassen swam approximately 600 ft (180 m) to the scene, dove roughly 12 ft (4 m) down to locate the unconscious man on the bottom, and then with one arm held him to the surface and began towing him toward shore.

A paddleboarder responded to her call for help and assisted the final part of the rescue.

For her courageous act she was awarded the Carnegie Medal, North America’s highest honour for civilian heroism.

The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern' (CPC) and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.

There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023 and as I have repeatedly lamented, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop. It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.

While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC APC-led government/leaders to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed, a Nation where peace, truth and justice reign!

As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose. -PO

OPay entered Nigeria’s market with what I describe as the Invisible Layer Strategy*. The company did not come to build a sustainable motorcycle hailing business or a mass-transportation empire. Instead, ORide, OBus, OKeke and the rest were simply decoys—tools to force millions to download the OPay app. By subsidizing rides, OPay pulled users into its orbit, knowing fully that the thin margins in transportation could not sustain long-term growth. But those loss-leading ventures had one critical value: they seeded the foundation for the paytech business, which was always the real play.

How did I know? The branding of those ventures, from OBus to ORide, was designed around OPay - the fintech unit.

In Harvard Business Review, I have written on the One Oasis Strategy and Double Play Strategy, and OPay exemplified those strategies in its business in Nigeria. Yes, OPay was hemorrhaging cash on transportation, but as users began to pay, withdraw, and transact through its wallet, the company built a fortress in payments. Then came the inflection point—one million users. At that moment, OPay no longer needed to keep up appearances. The ride-hailing units were closed, and the company doubled down on payments, its original vision.

To appreciate the genius here, consider what it would have cost OPay to acquire one million quality users via traditional advertising. Instead, it spent on subsidized transport rides, but those funds bought not just eyeballs—they bought transactions, habits, and trust. Today, the ORide and OBus brands are gone, but their footprints remain in the massive OPay userbase.

As Monday returns, let me drop this question: what invisible layer can be invent where you work?
