Very interesting article on how Gen AI can contribute to social learning. It’s good to see Gen AI treated with positive realism, which is seldom seen. I’d like to see more on the ethics of using LLM like this, with its biases and hallucinations, particularly in HE.
My open access journal paper on social generative AI for education now published. What are implications for education when AI becomes embedded in social networks? Experts in #edtech need to work with AI companies to train systems that care for learners. https://t.co/h2WRrBELfj
@digisim I suspect a lot of the hype is driven by the AI companies themselves. Publicity=profit. I’m not sure if Texas Instruments and Casio pushed calculators in the same way, I’m too young to remember. I know we were taught they were the future and they would change the world.
@digisim Yes. Calculators didn’t end maths classes, or make mathematicians unemployed. Arguably they’ve improved their efficiency and accuracy. You have to use them critically, GIGO. AI hasn’t quite got to the GIGO stage yet, it’s mostly GO. When it does, AI will just be another tool.
@KaySocLearn The log is to a wafer what a snowball is to a tea cake basically. I think there’s a bit more of a difference than just rolling the wafer in coconut but that’s probably the easiest way to picture it.
@KaySocLearn @damien_page I’ve thought about doing one on Marx and Strictly Come Dancing. Then I thought about the ages of the students and thought Marx and Love Island would be better. It was at that point I realised I’d actually have to watch Love Island to do the idea justice. Out the window it went.
@KaySocLearn I heard something like this on Radio 4 earlier this week. Someone had plugged into an ancient woodland. All the trees communicate with each other. So do the bushes. It’s all done through fungus connecting the roots. Long story short, they made a piece of music from it all.
@ChrisHeadleand @NotAMarvelHero @Stu3DArt Fallout 3 - it's a highly immersive game with a large number of outcomes. I particularly like how it fuses RPG and FPS. I also really like the way Karma due to your gameplay affects your interactions with NPCs and the quests you can undertake. A modern classic.
Could ‘The Flip’ be reversed by learning the lessons of the early days of the internet? A true community of active citizens. More Rousseau than Locke. This is what my own research is leading me to wonder and I’m pleased these are the general conclusions of this show too.
