This is an excerpt from @KTrebeck's keynote at our Economy for Public Good Conference.
In her speech, Dr Trebeck asks questions like what is the purpose of our economy? Is it a goal in its self? Or is it a means to get to our ultimate goals?
Full speech: vimeo
Contrary to global policymakers’ stated collective intent, petrostates — including Australia, Canada Norway, UK & USA — and big oil have signalled their intention to abandon mitigation commitments and continue to expand production in the coming decades.
There is now clear evidence that a number of crucial system-level tipping points have been reached, in some cases decades to centuries earlier than had been projected. Seven of nine sustainable planetary boundaries have already been exceeded.
The 🏴 and 🏴 governments support the ‘Wellbeing Economy’- which assesses the economy using social and environmental outcomes, not just GDP growth

A small group of people running a handful of global coal, and oil and gas corporates are causing this, and making $trillions. While rest of us pay the costs.

Pretty disappointing that such widespread calls for reform are being dismissed, especially when some sensible tweaks to CGT & negative gearing could be used to incentivise new housing supply.
Govt should release this Treasury modelling for scrutiny.

"This is not just about energy transformation. If our economy is geared toward productivity only…then immorality will continue to encroach, including on the actions of politicians." - @SDDecleve#auspol#climate
"We often hear from Aust’s gas export industry, "we have a shortfall, prices going up, not enough supply", it's ridiculous." - @ebony_bennett
"There are so many false narratives that are being thrown at us." - @SDDecleve#auspol#climate
"The way in which the oil and gas sector have been able to continue to extract and privatise it and keep it in their own hands, is really quite ethically immoral." - @SDDecleve#auspol#climate
And that's a WRAP! Thanks for joining us, fantastic to have @SDDecleve on our webinar to talk #climate & a changing world with @ebony_bennett.

The 4 men were killed on their way to conduct repairs to water infrastructure. Despite prior coordination with Israeli authorities their clearly-marked vehicle was bombed.

The human impacts of Australia’s housing market.
Nurses needing to deliver Uber Eats to supplement their incomes because their rents in Sydney and Melbourne are too high.
Duel income parents having to rely on a local Food Bank once a week because their combined incomes do not allow them to buy enough food for their kids.
Young professional couple choosing not to have kids because the rental market is too unpredictable and unstable.
Young precariously employed workers having to rely on their parents for bail outs because their mortgage repayments cannot be sustained by their irregular income.
Single parents choosing to skip meals to ensure their children a fed, because rents are too high.
Parents having to rely on anti depressants to function because the combined effort of the pandemic and interest rate rises has sent them over the cliff.
Older precariously employed Australians realising that they will hit 65 with a mortgage.
People we have spoken to across the country.
This is why optics matter and this is why some who have attempted to defend terrible optics are a BIG part of the problem.
