In 2007, James Bowen was living in supported housing in North London after years of homelessness and heroin addiction. He was busking on the streets and trying to get through one day at a time when he noticed an injured ginger cat sitting alone in the hallway of his building.

The cat had a badly infected leg. James barely had enough money to look after himself, yet he spent almost everything he had, around 30 US dollars, on veterinary treatment and antibiotics. He named the cat Bob.

James thought Bob would leave once he recovered. He never did.

Bob followed him onto buses, sat beside him while he played music in Covent Garden, and quietly became part of his everyday life. People stopped to watch the man with the ginger cat on his shoulder. They listened to his music. They bought copies of The Big Issue. For the first time in years, life started moving in a different direction.

James later said, "He came along and asked for my help, and he gave me more than I ever gave him."

Their friendship became the bestselling A Street Cat Named Bob series, selling millions of copies around the world and inspiring two films. What began with a wounded stray in a hallway became a story that reached readers in dozens of languages and reminded millions that compassion can change more than one life.
