"Beds Are Burning" is from Midnight Oil's 1987 album Diesel and Dust and became the band's biggest international hit, reaching #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #6 on the UK Singles Chart, and the Top 10 in several countries. The powerful protest anthem calls for the return of land to Australia's Indigenous peoples, particularly the Pintupi. Its lyrics were inspired by the band's 1986 tour of remote Aboriginal communities, where they witnessed firsthand the effects of displacement and poor living conditions.

In 2000 during the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics, Midnight Oil performed wearing black suits emblazoned with the word "SORRY" without prior approval from Olympic organizers as a protest against the Australian government's refusal to formally apologize to the Stolen Generations. Frontman Peter Garrett has long used the band's music and public appearances as a platform for political activism.
