@NicoleDL99 I do not necessarily think there is anything wrong with plastic surgery, but I do think it is important for people in the public eye to be honest about work being done on their bodies because they are enabling unrealistic body standards by not being honest and saying anything.
@NicoleDL99 I agree, I think it is important for universities to listen to the students. They want us to grow up and make our own decisions and be world changers, however, how can we when the people who are supposed to be enabling want to block us from actually making the necessary changes?
One of my favorite parts of this course was watching the videos our professor would add to each module. It was an easy way to enhance our learning and elaborate on the objectives for that module. They were always extremely interesting to watch, which made it fun! #rgcmtalkback21
As this class ends, one of my favorite parts that I will definitely miss is reading the discussion posts. I loved hearing what my classmates had to say and hearing what they liked and recommended. Having such a diverse class, there was always variety in responses. #rgcmtalkback21
@BrockBennett18 I think women would not be as hard on themselves if they saw different body types portrayed. However, since that is not the case, women are stuck constantly comparing themselves to unmeetable expectations that are shown in the media and on video games.
@ashleeabel @Lillyrcoe That is so true, a lot of the bias I have had to break down on my own have been from things I have heard as a kid. That is why it is also important for us to showcase diversity for kids too. We need to be mindful of what we are saying and also what we are showing them.
There needs to be an increase in diversity among body shapes and sizes. It's really hard for kids to grow up only seeing one type of body portrayed throughout media. Girls and boys need to start loving their body and that starts by us showcasing different types. #rgcmtalkback21
This week I wrote a discussion piece about hip-hop then vs. now. It's so interesting to learn that originally, hip-hop's central theme was about peace. Now it seems to be only about sex, drugs, or money. Crazy how the genre has evolved in less than fifty years. #rgcmtalkback21
@BrockBennett18 People get canceled too often for things a really long time ago. While there are consequences for actions today or recently, we don't need to go dig up dirt on other people from when they were young and uneducated. We need to let people grow and prove to us that they've changed.
@BrockBennett18 I agree. Social media has more of an impact on spreading misinformation rather than actually contributing & educating on specific political topics. I fear that if this isn't taken care of soon, there will be more misinformation out there than the truth with proper fact-checkers.
This week I read an article from Ohio State University that discussed social media's impact on politics. They found that social media leads to the spread of more misinformation than anything else. I think social media needs more fact-checkers to prevent this. #rgcmtalkback21
As avid social media users, we must remember that social media is simply a highlight reel. We can't place our identity in what we post on social media, nor assume it's the identity of others because it will lead us down a confusing search for meaning and purpose. #rgcmtalkback21
@ClaireWilsonJMC I agree Kylie Jenner is a current "it girl" however that status/role is dangerous for young women because they see Kylie Jenner's body and think they need that for themselves to be beautiful even though she's been open on getting work done.
@MarcoTurr2021 That's so true! Both genders have it tough in their own ways so there is truly no need to invalidate another gender and their experiences. Everyone's experience in life is different and you never know what someone is going through so always show empathy!
After learning about the career of Clara Bow, it reminds me of Britney Spears. It is so sad to see history repeat itself in its mistreatment of women. It's also so sad to see the way Hollywood tosses aside women they previously praised once they're done with them. #rgcmtalkback21
Society has come a long way in how they treat women. Though there is still work to be done, I don't believe women are seen as objects rather than people anymore, thank goodness. Still, the effects of objectifying women in the media are detrimental for young girls. #rgcmtalkback21
@DanaSearles It's so frustrating because there are a plethora of female directors out there but people would not know about it because they do not get the recognition they deserve. I still can't believe Greta Gerwig's Little Women did not receive any awards when the movie was spectacular.
@BrockBennett18 In addition to beauty standards being harmful, it's also extremely harmful the way the standards change over time. Once a woman finally feels like she's met a certain standard of "beautiful," it's most likely to change to something else. It seems to be a never-ending cycle.
I loved learning about all the ways women have evolved throughout film history. One of my favorite movie series is the Hunger Games, which contains a solid female lead. Crazy to think that back in the '50s, almost all females in films were exclusively housewives. #rgcmtalkback21
After reflecting on gender stereotypes this week in class, I realized that one gender truly isn't superior to the other. I always thought my life would be easier if I were a boy but they have their own hardships, struggles and expectations just like women do. #rgcmtalkback21
