@MarcoTurr2021 I love that we had so many opportunities to connect our coursework with our own lives. Being able to talk about our favorite artists, TV shows and role models made learning so fun.
I have really enjoyed using a social media, specifically Twitter, to complete assignments and interact with other students in Race, Gender, Class and the Media. What a fun opportunity! Thanks Dr. C! #rgcmtalkback21
For my @ 395 personal essay, I got to talk about a big moment of self-realization that came from this class. You cannot control how others choose to view you. #rgcmtalkback21
@ashleeabel It’s so sad that comparison is second nature to so many, including myself. I know how hard it is for me to recognize that Instagram is not real life, so I can’t imagine how it is effecting girls at the middle school age range.
@_oliviajones__ You’re so right. I see this as such an issue, especially with girls having access to social media at younger ages than ever before. It’s starting this mindset at such a young age!
Beauty standards have always been such a big issue but I think this is especially relevant in todays generation. With such easy access to social media, women are constantly comparing themselves to other women. I know I have to limit myself to avoid this issue. #rgcmtalkback21
Thinking about our generation’s “It Girl” I personally think of Kylie Jenner. For so long, women looked at Kylie as the goal of personal beauty. I wish more girls realized that anything is possible with the right surgeon and a lot of cash.💰#rgcmtalkback21
@bryce_bethany I love Doja Cat! She is such a great representation of being strong and not falling into societal norms. Also I love and appreciate her bold sense of style!
@marycatherine87 This is so awesome! I love hearing old family stories from relatives, hearing how much times have changed! So glad you got to talk with your Great Uncle!
Though a little (lot) late in the game, I am glad that Marvel finally started being more inclusive of their superheroes. I have always loved Marvel movies, but noticed the apparent lack of diversity and inclusion in their characters. #rgcmtalkback21
For this weeks discussion, I observed my boyfriend play Call of Duty since I don’t play video games. I will say, I was very surprised with the inclusion of women in the game. I wasn’t expecting it and appreciated that they didn’t sexualize their female characters! #rgcmtalkback21
@BrockBennett18 There have been so many issues with social media channels over the years that you would think there would be better ways to manage it by now. I have noticed some social media sites displaying “fake news” type messages over information proven to be false, and I hope others follow.
@parkershinskyou I also found it really interesting learning about the “IT” factor. Something we hear a lot, but getting to go deeper into the topic I realized a lot of things I didn’t before.
After watching the response UT released about the racist comments made by Stan Richards, I found it shocking that the university did not decide to change the name of their Advertising school, named after Stan Richards. #rgcmtalkback21
In Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Umoja Noble explains how search engines contribute to racism and racial stereotypes. I had never thought about search engines, like Google, contributing to these issues. I wish this could be fixed and admire Safiya’s goal. #rgcmtalkback21
@devinfieldTV It’s so sad that many women face the issue of being sexualized in the work place. I’m so glad that women are coming forward with their stories but so saddened at the extent. This shouldn’t be an issue that any women, or anyone, has to deal with.
@marycatherine87 I agree MC! This past discussion really made us think about how different our perspective would be if we were born in a different body and I found that very interesting.
In this weeks discussion we were asked to talk about someone of a different sex or sexuality that we admired. I chose Harry Styles because I love that he doesn’t think fashion has a gender. I love that Harry wears whatever he wants, confidently! #rgcmtalkback21
In a recent assignment we had to talk about an ad campaign that we thought did it “right.” I chose the Gillette First Shave campaign because I just think it’s the sweetest commercial of a father helping his trans son shave for the first time. #rgcmtalkback21
