The Maulana is exhorting the Indian Muslims to unite with Muslims around the world and save the Caliphate. He begins by stating that all relationships in the world can break down, father can turn against son, brother against brother, mother can shun her child but the relationship of a Muslim with a Muslim can never be severed.

The Maulana then continues: if even a grain of the soul of Islam is still alive in its followers, then if a thorn enters the foot of a Turk on the field of battle, I swear by Allah that no Muslim of Hindustan is a Muslim until he feels that prick in his own heart. For the Millat of Islam is one body, and Muslims, wherever they are, are its limbs. If a finger of the hand is cut, the rest of the body cannot remain at peace until it has felt the blow. This is not rhetoric. It is the plain meaning of the well-known hadith which Imam Ahmad related: the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said that the likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy and compassion is that of one body: when one limb complains, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever. And there is the other hadith, related by Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari: The believer to the believer is like a building; each part supports the other. This is the first and last distinguishing mark of the people of Islam, to which the Qur’an itself has pointed.

Then, to reinforce Muslim unity, Maulana Azad provides his commentary after quoting the Quranic verse 48: 29.

The Messenger of Allah and those with him are severe against the Kafirs, merciful among themselves.

Whatever hardness they have is for falsehood and unbelief; whatever love and tenderness they have is for truth, sincerity, Islam and Tawhid. So be extremely hard against disbelievers but extremely sympathetic and kind among ourselves; take heed, then, and do not pass over this as if you had not heard it.

P.S. This is the second time I am enlightening you on your heroes and their lifelong sociopolitical stances. The first time was when you refused to believe that books were banned, editors sacked, films blocked, and Majrooh jailed, under Nehru's rule. something strange is happening in ai right now.

an anthropic researcher who had spent three years working on pretraining at both openai and anthropic resigned, saying neither company was acting responsibly and that they were racing towards self-improving superintelligence while gambling with our lives.

soon after, anthropic ceo dario amodei appeared on cnn, talking about slowing down ai development and the risks these models could create.

but anthropic’s ipo is reportedly coming within weeks, with mid-october being discussed as a target. the company is aiming for a valuation of around 30 trillion, while nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest in the ipo.

that resignation could affect the ipo. so dario needs to come out and say: look, we are responsible.

both anthropic and openai’s leadership have repeatedly warned that ai research may need to slow down because we could develop extremely powerful and potentially harmful systems.

but at the same time, they are raising money at extraordinary valuations and launching new products every week.

openai has just shipped images 2.5, gpt-live-1, an agents api, a data agent and chatgpt for financial services. devday has not even happened yet, which means more launches are coming.

the race is not stopping.

the viral resignation tweet itself also had very strange engagement ratios: 169 million views, 790,000 likes, 202,000 reposts and 276,000 bookmarks. people are saying it may have been seeded and then boosted by everyone else.

my reading is that all this public discussion about danger and responsibility serves two purposes.

first, it tells the world that these companies possess incredibly powerful ai, which helps justify their valuations.

second, it allows them to talk about “self-regulation” before governments impose regulations they cannot control.

this looks less like an attempt to stop the race and more like a coordinated attempt to consolidate power, so that four or five frontier labs (openai, anthropic, xai, google and meta) eventually own almost everything.

google and meta will join this bandwagon soon.

their other major fear is open models becoming too good, especially chinese models.

chinese models are already approaching frontier-level performance at a fraction of the cost. they are available in the u.s., where most of openai and anthropic’s business customers exist, and they are putting enormous pricing pressure on american labs.

this pressure already led openai to slash the price of its latest lightweight model by 80% and anthropic scrapped a planned price increase for sonnet 5 and made its introductory $2/$10 pricing permanent.

you can literally see the cost pressure.

they cannot let this continue.

anthropic’s own writing says its primary concern is that authoritarian governments (particularly china) could build models more powerful than those created in the u.s. it argues that the threat remains even when those models are released with open weights or used by american businesses.

then the companies say they do not support banning open-weight models “that don’t have dangerous capabilities.”

meaning: open models that are not as good as our models are fine.

once they become competitive, they can be classified as dangerous.

under the garb of being “open to regulation,” they can push for chinese models to be banned, at least in the u.s. because china will never participate in a regulatory arrangement controlled by american companies, which makes it a convenient justification.

they want scarcity of ai to hike prices but open models make good ai accessible to everyone.

if good ai is no longer scarce, they cannot keep increasing its price. and if they cannot maintain that scarcity, their 30-trillion valuations start looking like a giant bubble.

these companies are also moving beyond general-purpose models and launching tailored, industry-specific products.

google has unveiled gemini ai products specifically for legal and finance workers and plans to enter another 10–12 industries. openai has launched chatgpt for financial services.

these products will help frontier labs disrupt the same industries that traditional technology and outsourcing companies have served for decades.

people say infosys should build its own llm and do the same thing.

but it does not work like that.

openai and google have invested billions over the past decade to reach this point. they have some of the world’s best ai talent. you cannot build all of that in one day simply because you have money.

look at sarvam. it has been trying, but it is still nowhere close.

india has been known as the call-centre capital of the world for decades. now those call centres will also have ai and will eventually need fewer people to perform the same work.

indian IT companies have already started incorporating these ai models, and they still possess money, distribution, enterprise relationships and execution experience.

but incorporating somebody else’s model is very different from owning the technology.

the frontier labs will not remain suppliers to the indian it industry.

they are becoming its competitors ready to devour not a few jobs but entire industries, otherwise their valuations cannot be justified.
