Algiers, #Algeria 🇩🇿– Today, @_AUC_PAPS with AU-CTE and @GIZAfricanUnion convened a Regional Forum on the Engagement of FemWise Members in Preventing Radicalization & Violent Extremism in North Africa & the Sahel.
Opening remarks from Honourable Justice Effie Owuor (@FemWiseAfrica Co-Chair), Amb. Dr @madutdet (Head of MDD), Ms Hassnaa Tamam (AYAP-North Africa) & Ms Salwa Makhloufi (Presidente de la Commission de Médiation du Conseil des Droits de l'Homme algérien) underscored the need for synergy between Member States, RECs, AU youth, women & civil society especially on prevention & early warning.
Purely security-driven responses are not enough: we need a holistic approach integrating economic, social & educational dimensions, with coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.
Women & youth are not just beneficiaries, they are part of the solution. Their meaningful inclusion in this initiative is essential to building sustainable peace.

The @AU_AYAPs Cohort 4, namely, Ms Amina Bello (Central Africa), Mr Patrick Kumi (East Africa), Ms Hassnaa Tamam (North Africa), Ms. Ruth Kangwa (Southern Africa) and Mr. Bakary Sonko (West Africa) and the @AUC_PAPS#Youth4Peace Africa Programme convened an online discussion as part of #PeaceDay2026 commemorations to reflect on their mandate across the 5 regions of the continent, in line with the Continental Framework on Youth, Peace and Security (CFYPS) and its 10 Year Implementation Plan.
Held on the theme, “From Framework to Action: Advancing Youth, Peace and Security in Africa”, the AYAPs highlighted youth experiences and contributions to peacebuilding, early warning and prevention, including in electoral contexts, promoting a culture of peace and nonviolence, political processes, and the ongoing development and adoption of national action plans (NAPs) on YPS across the continent.
They also underscored the need for financing, strengthening youth networks, coordination and collaboration with all stakeholders, including member states, RECs/RMs and partners, integrating YPS in national youth frameworks, greater youth advocacy and accountability, meaningful youth participation at policy and decision-making levels, bringing the AU closer to young people, ensuring NAPs translate commitments to action and bridging the gap between policy and implementation.
The discussions focused on AYAPs' role as amplifiers of youth voices in AU decision-making spaces, advocates for youth agency across the continent, and servants of youth constituencies, especially in conflict-affected contexts.
They identified key priorities, including strengthening regional mapping and information sharing; targeted institutional support for NAPs; capacity building and peace education; aligning youth peace and security and women, peace and security; and inter-institutional coordination platforms.
Participants agreed to continue supporting the YPS Agenda, work closely with all stakeholders toward #SilencingtheGuns, and promote a peaceful and secure Africa.

1/5 Ahead of #PeaceDay, the Peace Circle explored three themes: inclusion and representation in peace processes; climate, peace and security; and technology and innovation with a focus on practical, intergenerational solutions.
Yesterday’s dialogue organized in commemoration of the International Day of Peace 2026, co-organized by @UNOAU_, @_AfricanUnion, @issafrica, and @IPSS_Addis , under the theme: “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day”, examined how changing generations, emerging technologies, climate pressures and evolving understandings of peace and security are shaping Africa’s policy landscape.
The discussion brought intergenerational perspectives into conversation, highlighting the value of combining experience from past crises with young people’s perspectives on emerging challenges. Participants explored the opportunities and risks presented by AI, misinformation, digital inequality and technology governance, stressing the need for stronger digital literacy, responsible innovation and greater African participation in shaping digital policies.
A recurring message was that meaningful inclusion must extend beyond consultation. Young people and communities should have a role in defining challenges, developing solutions and influencing decisions that affect their futures.
The dialogue concluded with a recognition that these complex challenges require sustained engagement rather than single solutions. Continued intergenerational dialogue, locally grounded approaches and stronger follow-up are essential to turning ideas into practical action.
Happening now: UNOAU together with @AUC_PAPS@issafrica@IPSS_Addis, is convening an Intergenerational #PeaceCircle bringing together youth, diplomats, policymakers, academics and peacebuilders for dialogue on peace, inclusion & collective action.

Today, @AUC_PAPS is convening a pivotal 3-day Technical Consultative Meeting with RECs and technical experts to review two landmark instruments: the Draft AU Policy Framework on Women's Equal Participation in Mediation and Peace Processes and the Draft Principles on the Integration of Women in Mediation, a critical step toward institutionalizing women's meaningful and influential participation across #AU peace processes.
In their opening remarks, Amb. @madutdet, Head of the Mediation and Dialogue Division and Ms. @mpoumoudoris, Special Representative of the @UN Women Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA, underscored the need to move from dialogue to decisive implementation.
To achieve this, the meeting will pursue four interconnected objectives: (i) to address and dismantle structural barriers by providing targeted, substantive feedback that breaks systemic exclusion; (ii), to amplify proven practice by showcasing successful integration of women in mediation from RECs, @FemWiseAfrica, and experts across local, national, and regional levels; (iii) to enforce accountability by proposing practical and implementable measures including binding quotas and gender-sensitive capacity building that make inclusion mandatory, not optional; and (iv), to forge AU-RECs consensus that transforms shared commitments into action-oriented recommendations, ensuring these documents become operational, not aspirational.
