Unfortunately, this is from India (I guess no surprises) - sorry, long read, but I need to rant.

The relative of the "doctor" (he addresses her as his aunt) took a live video inside the operation theatre where a woman in labour underwent C-section without universal precautions.

No face mask, people without scrubs and masks and gloves inside. Relatives of the woman undergoing the surgery inside the OT watching on in full civilian clothes. A guy across the "doctor" is supposedly the assistant - technical or surgical, no idea. Zero infection control. Cannot see an anaesthetist. If the woman went into shock or any emergencies happen, only these bunch of clowns in the room are available for "advanced medical support."

Now this "doctor" is actually no a doctor, but an Ayurveda practitioner. Ayurveda practitioners are given the title of "Dr." by the Government of India (even Homeopaths, Naturopaths etc are too), making it impossible for the public and patients to separate quacks from real healthcare professionals.

What you see here, is the outcome of the Indian Government's vision for integrating Ayurveda and such pseudoscientific quackery with scientific treatments. Incompetent nincompoops are let lose on the public. This is going to be a disastrous cocktail not for those who can afford medical treatment (because they land up in competent healthcare facilities) but for those people looking for cheaper alternative for treatment and for those who cannot afford realistic treatments. The Government seems to be interested in widening and deepening this healthcare gap rather than finding rational and logical ways to mend it.

Ayurveda has surgery too (but I would not recommend anyone go there). Shalya Tantra is a specialized branch of Ayurveda dedicated to general surgical procedures while Shalakya Tantra focuses on diseases and conditions occurring in the head and neck region, specifically above the collarbone. Postgraduate students (MS degree) in Ayurveda can perform a variety of surgical procedures including general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, and dental procedures - such as skin grafting, small tumour excision, circumcision, traumatic wound management and dressings, tooth extractions, minor eye procedures etc.

When the Government itself promotes mediocrity as excellence because they are incompetent in taking the country up through scientific progression, it is the public that ultimately suffer. The same public that elected this Government and such Governments before this one.

I am not saying the current Government is responsible for all of this (they are, for promoting this without shame or concern though) but decades of rule by various Governments is. I have never seen a serious Government that promoted science and spirit of critical thinking and inquiry to the masses in India during my time, which is why we have a huge healthcare gap even now - some of the best treatments are available to people in India, while some people get the worst, like from a third-world country too - like from this Ayurvedic quack promoting herself as an OBGyn.

And then there is that part in the video where the Ayurveda quack's relative mentions that "Every C-section my aunty does, ends up in delivery of a baby boy." This again is a kind of advertisement for this quack's clinic and services where large numbers of educated as well as uneducated people in India have closet [cultural] preference to a male child over a female child. Pregnant women (or their relatives) will now search and find this "doctor" who will deliver a baby boy for them.

If you have read the Ayurvedic texts, you'll notice that there are large sections and chapters in it where measures and practices are discussed to help a woman "bear a boy child" and "not a girl child." Pumsavana is a Hindu ritual described in Ayurveda, traditionally performed during the third month of pregnancy, believed to influence the gender of the child, specifically aimed at ensuring the birth of a male child. This is systematically taught to students in Ayurveda syllabus too. Tell me how this country will ever evolve or become a super-power? F*cking wishful thinking.

Now somebody tag whoever is in charge of healthcare where this lady quack is working and get them to shut her services so that people can avail better and realistic services.

In India, following these few survival skills could cut your chances of dying randomly by half :

Don't go to crowded places.

Follow defensive driving. Don't stare, abuse (even with closed glass), or argue with aggressors on the road.

Anticipate stray/pet dogs at any spot. Don't leave your kids out of sight.

Don't walk or drive under electrical wires, especially look for them in the streets before you enter.

Be a socio-political critic, but try not to hurt the ego of any politician, babu, cop, or religious fanatic personally.

Learn 8–10 common phrases of the local language in language-sensitive states if you are planning to stay there for long, or just carry a skull cap.

Anticipate open sewers and manholes, especially on roads you are not familiar with.

Don't stand under giant billboards or flyovers, especially during rains.

Try not to go out at night. If you have to, don't go alone. Especially women of your family, don't care if someone calls you a misogynist.

Avoid nightclubs where Scorpio/Thar-wale urban dehatis are allowed.

Avoid eating out as much as you can, especially street food.

Health insurance is almost a fraud, govt hospitals are in bad shape, and private ones are too costly. So better stay in shape and avoid frequent hospital visits. Run, exercise, eat healthy.

I'm getting lot of responses from people of Telangana highlighting various achievements of KCR backed by data.

I feel regional parties for states and alliances for centre may do good for states. I know there are exceptions to any rule. But in general, regional parties are better for states. Tamil Nadu experience proves it. Andhra did well and would do well under NCBN. KCR did excellently in Telangana. I don't know how many even remember about Janata Party rule in Karnataka.

It is not that other states cannot do it. There is no secret recipe. In 2021, Tamil Nadu government fixed what was then an audacious goal of $1 trillion GDP by 2030. This was in consultation with the then formed economic advisory council of Tamil Nadu.

Here a word about economic advisory council. It is headed by Raghuram Rajan, former governor of RBI, who is hated by BJP. It also has Arvind Subramanian , former Chief Economic Advisor as member, who is again hated by BJP. The other members are Nobel Prize Econimist Esther Duflo, Popular Economist Jean Dreze and former finance secretary Narayanan. The common thread connecting the members of the council is they are all disliked by BJP.

In consultation with economic advisory council, a ten year road map was developed. It was decided to make Tamil Nadu a leading manufacturing powerhouse in South Asia. This would also provide employment to masses.

Equally it was decided to make Tamil Nadu a knowledge capital and innovation hub of South Asia. So it was decided to focus on areas like semiconductors, chip designing, artificial intelligence, space technology, renewable energy, green hydrogen, R&D, design and development, data science and so on.

Companies bringing high end GCC (Global Capability Centres) jobs are incentivised through PLI like schemes. Even two days ago, PayPal announced adding 1000 high end artificial intelligence jobs in Chennai. Microchip's R&D is coming in Chennai.

The focus was equally on bringing both manufacturing jobs and high end knowledge jobs.

Even in 2021, Tamil Nadu was a developed state and excelling in social infrastructure. An audacious goal and focus to achieve the same was freshly brought in. Execution was also identified as key.

The Chief Minister, government officials, nodal developmental agencies like Guidance; everyone started repeatedly talking about $1 trillion goal by 2030. It has spread so much that a person like me also repeatedly talking about it today.

Tamil Nadu achieved nominal GDP growth rates of 15.5%, 15.1% and 13.4% during the last 3 years. The required run rate is 18% nominal GDP growth every year till 2030 to reach $1 trillion. A daunting task. But as Raghuram Rajan said early this year; if any state can achieve this number, it is only Tamil Nadu.

So, our journey of $1 trillion GDP which would also lead to percapita on par with developed countries continues.

Not that other states cannot do what we do. May not be possible for northern states. But very much within reach of other South and Western states.

States like Maharashtra which is an economic powerhouse, has been stagnating a lot for last one decade. I believe there is truth in perception that developments meant for Maharashtra are going to Gujarat.
