I never new that oiling could cause problems across different generations of penguins. More effort needs to be put in to ensure that oil spills are prevented.
Oiling has the adverse effect of decreasing the growth rates of chicks born to African penguin parents that have been oiled.

This just goes to show how other animals are more similar to humans than we may initially think. It gives all the more reason to treat these animals ethically.
African penguins behave in similar ways to humans, whether it be being joyful when a mate returns back to the nest or sharing the duties of parenting with a partner (Smith 126).

Legislation like this will hopefully be the nail in the coffin of the inhumane treatment of orcas. This law needs to get the traction it needs so that it can be passed.
https://t.co/tJyamy7w3f There is no law outside California preventing SeaWorld or any other facility from breeding and exploiting orcas for entertainment. This bill would change that fact. #39canimals

think that it is good to se the government working to subsidize these non-lethal methods. It shows that there is some concern for the well being of animals. Hopefully the decreased losses will convince farmers to adopt these methods permanently.

The idea of prosthetic teeth for dolphins seems outlandish at first, but it makes sense that they are critical for success at hunting in the wild.
Not only is the dolphin project an advocate for getting dolphins out of captivity, but they also are improving the lives of dolphins by doing things like getting them needed teeth. Read this blog to see more. #39canimals https://t.co/wJOx7w9ppe
Protesting is an effective way to support killer whales. Protests by animal rights groups in 2017 led to SeaWorld San Diego changing their orca show to one that highlights the whaleβs natural tendencies to hunt and communicate, rather than their ability to do tricks. #39canimals

The amount of trash in our oceans is baffling. Garbage patches in the ocean are a terrible thing to see. It's good to see people starting to tackle this massive issue.
The ocean clean up is an organization that is focused on getting the trash out of our oceans. They have created systems in order to do this efficiently. #39canimals
Young captive killer whales hit their nose, slam their head, and scrape their skin against the concrete walls of their tanks as a form of self harm. They also give themselves tooth damage through jaw popping. #39canimals
One solution to the problem of noise pollution coming from offshore wind farms is to create a bubble curtain before the open ocean. This can reduce the noise by up to 95%! #39canimals
Check out a research study that demonstrated the viability of ecological corridors for elephants, even in more urban settings. (2/2)

#39canimals Although creation of ecological corridors can cost some privately owned farmland, they stand out as they not only help elephants safely travel without conflict, but also help to give back some of their habitat while connecting protected areas. (1/2)

The overall effect of habitat loss on the Sumatran elephants has been devastating; the population has fallen by β80 percent in less than 25 years,β (WWF).

In a 2018 campaign, PETAβs mobilization of people in a grassroots movement, held in part over Twitter, worked to stop elephant polo in Thailand, where elephants were abused with bullhooks.

As elephantsβ natural habitats continue to recede, they are forced to live in ever closer contact with human settlements and the people living and working within them. This closer contact creates friction between humans and elephants that can often erupt...

Some types of elephants are especially affected by the habitat loss, with Sumatran elephants native to Indonesia critically endangered, having a total population as small as 2800 elephants (Mariati 248).

Writing 39C also gave me the experience of building my own website portfolio covering my work and growth in the course. Take a look at my digital portfolio here:

The idea of using Twitter or social media for academic research was completely foreign to me prior to this course. However, I now know how powerful of an academic tool it can be. I also learned about amazing grassroots movements made possible by Twitter!
#WhatIlearnedin39C
One of the most important skills I learned in Writing 39C was the ability to analyze and break down research articles. I am now better equipped to quickly and easily get the general overview of a study and be able to integrate its findings into my own work.
