The thing is, allowing for a variety of opinions that fall outside a narrow definition IS a defense of personal liberties.
Just say you’re super fucking rich and want the paper you bought to parrot opinions you like. There’s no greater consequence since you’re super fucking rich
I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.
I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.
I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.
I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.

So they're rehiring the racist-tweeting 25 yr old that they pushed to resign and casting themselves as driven by the spirit of forgiveness as they tell the congressman who asked for an apology for the racist tweets that they're disgusted by him—all while the other guy on the team stands accused of sharing information with a competitor and another guy on the team stands accused of amplifying white supremacists online?
Last January, I noticed something peculiar in my 2yo’s bedroom that - after a year of obsessive reporting - led me to a profound cosmic revelation about what’s even possible in our universe. A 🧵.
I want you to know this story. So you can understand how sweeping and suffocating the gun violence epidemic is.
I hope you read this entire thread.
1/ It starts with the shooting of 20 year old Shane Oliver on October 20, 2012.
This is like Zuck copy/pasting that wall of text about not giving facebook permission to use his images because of the "Rome statute", and it's hilarious.
#HassanFirouzi is 34yo, and is the father of a newborn daughter who was only 18 days old at the time of his arrest. He has been sentenced to death and is enduring severe torture in prison. In a video he begs, covered in bruises, “Help me, I need to see my daughter one more time.”
From @ZoeSchiffer and I, an account of one of the most chaotic days in Twitter’s history. We’re making it free for everyone to read because we think the whole story needs to be told.

Republicans wouldn’t be slight favorites to win House control right now if they hadn’t been able to gerrymander far more states than Dems.
And, Dems wouldn’t hold the slight majority today if courts hadn’t struck down GOP gerrymanders in FL, NC, PA and VA in the last 7 years.
Solid chance that Democrats win Secretary of State races in all of WI/AZ/NV.
Combine this with their MI SoS + PA Gov wins + Raffensperger in GA and you may not have an election denier as Secretary of State in any of the core 6 presidential battlegrounds.

NEW: The Tribune & @propublica obtained 20+ emergency calls and dispatch recordings made before and during law enforcement's chaotic 77-minute-long response to the Uvalde shooting.
Calls identified children trapped with the shooter. And police waited. https://t.co/cBHSs5UeEe
