A scene that brings tears to the eyes of all the people of Somaliland and those who value the existence of this nationhood.

It is the commemoration of the building of Somaliland's nationhood in 1999.

These forces are not sustained by vast sums of money; rather, they are troops who have sacrificed themselves for the building of the nation.

Somaliland was not built on international aid or foreign intervention, but rather on the will of the people.

The mutual recognition between #Somaliland and #Israel has popular support in Somaliland because it is seen as a step towards universal recognition that will ultimately lead to UN membership. It is fully supported by all political parties, including the opposition.

The debate around the embassy location is therefore not about the recognition itself. It is a healthy domestic conversation in a democracy about a foreign policy choice and how it may affect other states’ decisions to recognise Somaliland.

No matter which party comes to power, the recognition is irreversible because Somaliland does not break with its core national interests.

This is simply a clarification for foreigners who may be confused by the current conversation. It is particularly for Somalian politicians who may try to interpret the discussion wrongly.

BREAKING: Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud used remarks that critics have described as antisemitic, saying: "The Jews are a bad people, and welcoming them is a disgrace. You have nothing to do with them; your Somali brothers are the ones who matter to you."

Heavy gunfire has broken out in Somali’s capital Mogadishu as government forces and opposition fighters clash over a political dispute.

The violence broke ahead of planned demonstrations against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who decided to remain in office ​after his term expired last month. He argued that a new constitution that was passed in March granted him another year in power.

The opposition has described the move as unconstitutional and called for protests.
