Today, I took the Oath of Office on a bible that belonged to my sharecropper great-grandparents, administered by the second African American to serve in the SC Senate since Reconstruction and became the second youngest legislator of the 170 member SC General Assembly. Grateful.

Some good news today.
South Carolina has chosen NOT to move forward with gerrymandering for the time being.
AND a court has blocked Alabama’s gerrymander.

He’s rights — it is egregious. My constiuents in Blythewood and NE Columbia would share a Congressional Representative with folks in Pickens County which is 100+ miles away and are in no way communities of interest.
After voting in Orangeburg, U.S. House Rep. Jim Clyburn said the proposed congressional map was probably the most “egregious” he has seen since the 1890s.

On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves.
Reminder that the first Memorial Day was celebrates by former enslaved African Americans in Charleston, SC in 1865. It was first known as Decoration Day.

Elizabeth Eckford is 84 and still with us, a living reminder that history isn't always ancient. At 15, she became one of the Little Rock Nine, walking alone into Central High in 1957 while facing a screaming mob of segregationists. She later graduated from Central State Univ.
Travis Alexander, from the Richland County elections office, now explaining the impact of the proposed maps, which would divide the county into three districts and split some 20 precincts.
At minimum, impact is $800,000, less than half of which -- $347k -- will be reimbursed.
