If you even slightly entertain the thought of failure, you give your mind a chance to start noticing reasons to fail. But if the only option on your mind is to win, then the world seems to conspire in your favor, because your mind will notice opportunities it wouldn't have before. Become delusionally optimistic, not because it's realistic, but because it's effective. It drastically increases your chances of success.
I've seen this so many times:
No PMF -> founders add countless features to the product -> unrealistic expectations about throughput -> low quality product/engineering -> no sales -> more features -> people burn out -> the manager has to deal with all of the above and burns out as well.
Please remember that the overwhelming majority of people that you hear talk online about the current state of programming are not building anything that:
- is dealing with significant amounts of money
- has non-trivial financial risks from production defects
- is being collaborated on by even a single other person
- has been and is being iterated on over a long time scale
also remember that the overwhelming majority of takes online are:
- not coming from a place of actually wanting to provide you with useful information
- are at least in some capacity posturing. This industry is changing at a rapid pace and seeming ahead is of legitimate financial importance to individuals
- bad
“Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.” — Franz Kafka
The ADHD dream career is being a highly paid consultant who swoops in, solves a complex crisis with a chaotic stroke of genius, and immediately exits before having to fill out the timesheets.
While there are many behaviors needed to guarantee high output, there is one single behavior guaranteed to prevent all output: trying to please everyone.
7. Experiment engine (pull results → watch for guardrail issues → calculate power → conclude if past target days → move ticket to the correct column → create a PR to clean up the experiment code → post results to Slack)
Agent loops you need to have as a growth eng team:
1. Velocity reporter (win rate of this quarter, Slack message)
2. Meta trends reporter (last 90 days of testing and their conclusions)
🧵Continued...
5. Ticket writer/designer (pick up any hypothesis in Slack → design it using @floraai and @mobbin MCPs → add the formatted ticket to Linear backlog).
6. Backlog → experiment (3x per day, check Linear for any experiment ready for dev and build them)
Ninety-nine percent of people in the world are convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre.
The level of competition is thus fiercest for “realistic” goals, paradoxically making them the most time- and energy-consuming.
If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is, too.
Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.
Unreasonable and unrealistic goals are easier to achieve for yet another reason.
Having an unusually large goal is an adrenaline infusion that provides the endurance to overcome the inevitable trials and tribulations that go along with any goal. Realistic goals, goals restricted to the average ambition level, are uninspiring and will only fuel you through the first or second problem, at which point you throw in the towel.
If the potential payoff is mediocre or average, so is your effort.
The fishing is best where the fewest go, and the collective insecurity of the world makes it easy for people to hit home runs while everyone else is aiming for base hits.
There is just less competition for bigger goals.
Wtf this is INSANE.
This is the first open source model from a US lab that codes at frontier levels.
The open source frontier no longer exclusively belongs to China.
The US is officially in the OS model race!
