Meet Prof. @iBaino , General Chair of DSA 2026.
Professor at Makerere University and lead of the @AirQoProject , using AI to monitor and model air quality across Africa.
#DSAKampala2026
Air pollution is an everyday reality for millions living along busy urban roads. In cities like Kampala, traffic-related #AirPollution is driven by more than emissions, it’s also driven by;
🚌 Aging vehicles
🛣️ Dust from roads
🚗Idling & congestion

Are you working with #AirQuality data in Africa? The abstract deadline for the @CleanAir_Africa has been extended.
This year, we're excited to be co-hosting a workshop on sensor network management for continuous monitoring in African cities.
🗓️ New due date: 5th April 2026
Submit your abstract: https://t.co/bqZPkSsNVO
Cleaner air starts with better evidence.
What stands out from our latest research in Kampala is not just that traffic drives #AirPollution, but how.
Non-exhaust sources like road dust are emerging as major contributors. This challenges us to rethink our approach
We need integrated approaches across:
🚍 Transport systems
🛣️ Road infrastructure
🏙️ Urban planning
🌿 Green spaces & dust control
📊 Data-driven decision-making
Today’s seminar is an opportunity to align science with action.
📅 Tue, 17th March
⏲️11:00 EAT

Happy #InternationalWomensDay
Today, we celebrate the women shaping our communities in so many ways, in science, in leadership, in classrooms, in homes, and everywhere in between.
We’re proud of the incredible women working to improve air quality and build healthier cities. We also recognise every woman whose work, voice, and care keep our communities moving forward every day.
This year’s theme, #GiveToGain, reminds us that when women rise, communities thrive.

As part of the leadership in Nairobi, you will hear no excuses from me. Yesterday’s flood situation was an indictment. We know it’s a sum total of many failures but mostly failures of leadership. We must do better because you don’t deserve this. For all those who slept on the roads, those counting loses from the flood damage poleni sana. Sadly, the County disaster team has confirmed to me that multiple lives were also lost. My office has sent out teams to assess the situation and see how we can help. Meanwhile, It is obvious that we need a comprehensive review of how the city drains because the piecemeal interventions are not working. I extend my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones last night. Poleni sana.
For too long, the conversation on climate adaptation has been dominated by academic and economic analyses, particularly around the cost of inaction.

Do you know the quality of the air you're breathing? Every day, thousands of cars, boda bodas, and taxis fill our streets and the air.
Transport-Related #AirPollution (TRAP) is one of the biggest invisible threats to our health in Uganda's cities.
Over the coming weeks, we'll lift the lid on TRAP, the science, the data, and what we can do about it.
Stay tuned 📢
Household #AirPollution is one of the most overlooked health risks. Cooking with solid fuels can push indoor pollution far beyond safe limits, putting children at greatest risk.
Expanding access to cleaner fuels is critical for protecting communities.

“Air pollution is both a global and an African issue. We have a reason to be here, and we have a reason to act.” @V_Nthusi, @HEIresearch
The data is sobering:
❗️7.9 million global deaths in 2023 linked to air pollution
❗️#AirPollution is the 3rd leading risk factor for death across the African Union
❗️In East, West, Central & Southern Africa, it is the second leading risk factor for deaths in children under 5 & contributes to 362,000 deaths in children under five
The case for action on dirty air has never been clearer:
🚑 Nearly 8m premature deaths each year
🌫 99% of people breathe unsafe air
🌍 #1 environmental health threat globally

City-to-city learning is transforming how urban centres tackle #AirPollution.
We're honoured to have hosted a delegation from Dhaka, Bangladesh, for a learning exchange facilitated by @KCCA. The visit focused on Kampala’s experience & approach to high-density #AirQuality monitoring, strengthening city-to-city partnerships, and data-driven policymaking.
This collaboration highlights the power of cities learning from one another to build healthier, more resilient urban environments.
The 3rd Lung Science & Health Symposium #LSHSymposium25 is LIVE at @Makerere Main Hall.
As Lung Institute marks 10 years of advancing lung health, we gather to share research, innovation, and impact made over the past decade.
