When the principal of persuasion, consistency, is used in commercials there is often a phrase, song, character of celebrity that becomes affiliated with the brand. Out of the other five principals, which enhances the effects of consistency the most? #UWJ201
@oliviajschaffer This idea touches on the concept of heterogeneity. A very dense network increases the chance that you will encounter more people with different ideas, but this might not always be the case. Decreasing polarization will occur when your network is heterogeneous. #UWJ201
@TianaMartin2000 I believe that watching the news will always be the most reliable and informative news source, despite social media's increasing popularity. Social media places an emphasis on the viewer's ideas, where traditional sources provide a greater emphasis on facts. #UWJ201
Based on the lecture, radio and newspaper usage has been steady over the past years. In the future, when younger generations become a larger percentage of the population, will this steady usage see a decline? Why or why not? #UWJ201
@jesskatz9 I think that this negative trend is also seen in celebrities. Celebritiy accomplishments, such their awards or new albums, are covered, but their controversies or critiques are a larger bulk of the coverage. #UWJ201
@RZickwolff I believe that the 2020 election will have more negative coverage than the 2016 election because Trump will have four years of political decisions under his belt for people to find negative information on. #UWJ201
In lecture today, we discussed how an increase in negative news coverage occurred in 1984, due to the creation of cable television . With the growing usage of social media, will we see an even larger increase in negative news coverage or a decrease? #UWJ201
@lolagearyy I believe self-interest is the most important rule because a democratic society cannot be effective if the citizens aren't involved. Citizens become more involved in politics when they know it affects their personal life and ideals. #UWJ201
@lillydeprey I think that across all media, people in power are held accountable due to the variety of media. When looking at individual journalists, they could do a better job of holding people with the same political standpoint as them accountable. #UWJ201
As said in today's lecture, a society’s common understanding is the most influential action coordination mechanism in a democratic political system. Can common understandings become misunderstood by people with polar opposite political views? #UWJ201
@taylorrclarrk19 I believe the sprial of silence is bad when you have a strong opinion but are too afraid to share it, so you stay quiet. But, the spiral of silence can be good when someone has a neutral opinion and stays quiet. #UWJ201
@Owen__Olson @ATveleneva I notice the spiral of silence when a teacher asks a question in class. If everyone raises their hand for option A, few or no people will for option B because it is the inferior choice. This happens because the idea of isolation scares people and they want to avoid it. #UWJ201
In Monday's lecture, it was said that journalists are more often liberal rather than conservative. Do these political biases create a slant in the news during presidential elections? Why or why not? #UWJ201
@jesskatz9 No, I think teenagers use social media for entertainment/communication while adults use it for political content. This makes teens more likely to select posts based on people they know or amusing content, where adults select posts that match their political opinion. #UWJ201
@dirkse_13 I think my audience impacts my sharing habits significantly. I don't want to post anything that would make people angry or uncomfortable. But, this is my personal opinion and others may be completely okay with sharing their full opinion despite the possible backlash. #UWJ201
The radio is a type of media that gives all ranges of information. Would the radio be considered selective exposure since you pick the channel or incidental exposure since you cannot pick the songs or advertisements you listen to? #UWJ201
@imadethis4J201 I think that this could lower the knowledge gap, but I think the way that news is presented matters. In lecture, we also talked about how TV is easy to learn, but less knowledge is retained. If children were to watch a video everyday, the gap would only slightly change. #UWJ201
@afontaine4504 In my opinion, I think social media framing is more powerful because the person posting has a direct following base, usually made of people with similar beliefs or demographics. They can then create a strong frame specifically for that audience. #UWJ201
In today's lecture on framing, we discussed how humans have the tendency to highlight the negative in many situations. Is this negative bias the cause for many of the "hate comments" that are shared on social media? #UWJ201
@minnieeecoop I think that this depends on the reputation that the particular celebrity has. Celebrities can sometimes portray themselves in an unprofessional way, but if the celebrity has a good reputation I would support the candidate. #UWJ201
