An Indian mathematician who won the Fields Medal walks into a Bengaluru classroom and starts the lesson with poetry instead of numbers.
This is Manjul Bhargava, filmed by NDTV in 2015. Fields Medal 2014, number theory, Princeton.
The move that makes the video is a piece of history most people never learn. The sequence the West calls Fibonacci was written down by Indian scholars centuries earlier, while counting rhythm patterns in Sanskrit verse. Bhargava rebuilds it in front of the class from the poetry problem alone - long and short syllables, and how many ways they combine.
Then daisies. Then a cobra. All landing on the same numbers, none of it introduced as mathematics.
Watch how he asks the questions. He never states the pattern. He sets up the problem and lets the children arrive at it themselves. That's the actual teaching, and it lands harder than any lecture, because they discovered it instead of being told.
The deeper lesson underneath the sequence: mathematics isn't a foreign subject imported into daily life. It's the structure already sitting inside poetry, flowers, and the coil of a snake. Bhargava isn't teaching numbers. He's teaching children to see the pattern that was always there.
A data scientist I know played it for his 9-year-old and said the sequence stuck inside 20 minutes.

The Income Tax Return Statistics released by the I.T. Department for FY13 and FY23 reveal what is going on with salaried taxpayers in the last 10 years. Writer and journalist Monika Halan @monikahalan has published eye-opening data in her HT column today.

Annual Inflation Rate from FY13 to FY23 (Ministry Data) is as follows:
Using CPI (MOSPI, Base 2024=100): Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 55.6 in March 2013 and 93.3 in March 2023. This means cumulative inflation of 68% over the decade (Inflation: 5.3% per year average).

GDP Growth vs. Wage Growth
Question:
From FY13 to FY23, how the annual nominal GDP growth is around 11%, while annual nominal wage growth is only 2.8% for lower income, 0.3% (flat) for middle income, and -1% (negative) for higher income salaried individuals?
Answer:
a. Demographic Dividend: India adds roughly 1 crore young individuals to the working-age population every year. As these new workers join the formal economy, they add to the nation’s productivity (GDP), receive salaries, and become taxpayers.
b. Nearly all of the GDP growth (related to salaried employees) comes from more taxpayers entering the system rather than existing taxpayers earning substantially more within their income band.
c. Since labour supply is more than demand, the bargaining power of employers increases. As a result, the salaries of existing workers remain flat or negative.
d. So, India’s GDP growth story is a labour supply-driven growth story, and not a labour demand-driven (wage-growth driven) story.
e. Upward Mobility: Some smart or lucky individuals manage to move up the income bands through skill upgrades, job switching, etc. But the vast majority remain stuck within their band, and keep losing the inflation battle.
Gen Z’s Uncertain Future
a. India is not an export-led or manufacturing-led economy. India’s growth story is a domestic consumption growth story. But the massive “demographic dividend” which India enjoyed for so long is now ending. Nothing lasts forever.
b. India urgently needs to move from a labour-supply driven economy to real wage-growth driven economy. Otherwise, once the demographic tailwind ends in a few years, there will be no wage tailwind to replace it.
c. Economists like Dr. Arvind Subramanian @arvindsubraman and Dr. Raghuram Rajan have long said that consumption in India is broken. Now we know that’s because wage growth is broken.

Why a Calorie Deficit Matters for Fat Loss & Fitness
Many people think a special diet or exercise alone causes fat loss. The science is simpler:
➡️ Fat loss requires a sustained calorie deficit,you must burn more energy than you consume over time. Your body then uses stored body fat to meet the energy gap.
Losing excess body fat improves:
✅ Movement and stamina
✅ Insulin sensitivity and metabolic health
✅ Blood pressure and blood sugar control
✅ Joint health by reducing stress on knees and back
✅ Overall fitness and quality of life
However, a calorie deficit alone is not enough. To lose fat while preserving muscle, combine it with:
• Protein-priority nutrition
• Regular strength training
• Daily physical activity
• 7–8 hours of quality sleep
Avoid extreme calorie restriction. Very large deficits can increase muscle loss, reduce performance, and make the plan difficult to sustain.
A calorie deficit is a tool for fat loss, not the definition of health. Once you reach a healthy body fat level, your focus should shift to maintenance, building strength, improving fitness, and enjoying a nutrient-dense diet.
The goal isn’t to eat less forever. The goal is to lose excess fat while keeping your body strong, healthy, and metabolically fit.

Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.
